Amateur cluster / parallel computing

This idea originated from seross69's excessive insanity thread. The goal would be to have say, a Case Labs TX10-D case with 3 Supermicro X8QBE-F-B motherboards to handle the CPU and ram load and a SRX to handle the graphics, all working together to try and outperform an entry level Cray (like a Cray CX1) for less money. I assume that you would need a special router that could combine these into nodes on a single cluster. It wouldn't be like servers and hosts; it would be servers working together. Does anyone know how to do this?

I see there are quite a few threads here on clustering, but none quite as specific (if so please direct me).
