Firmware update failed on a 250GB Samsung 840 SSD with Magician 4.0

Hi.

I got my new 250 GB Samsung 840 SSD (non-pro) just a few days ago. When I try to update the firmware, I get this error message:

I've tried using the older version 3.2 of Samsung Magician as well, but it gave the exact same error message. Should I try using the iso file from Samsung's website to make a bootable CD and update the firmware that way?

According to the website, the latest firmware version addresses the following issues : Improved ''dirty drive'' write performance. I wonder if it's actually worth the trouble to update it at all.

My system specs are in my sig.

Any comments and suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

I would believe it is because its your OS drive, and a new firmware will wipe everything.
At least that was how it was before to my knowledge, I have never updated a drive that is a OS drive actually, so don't quote me on that.

Very few if any FW upgrades are data destructive at this point.

Problem solved!

I did use the ISO file to make a bootable CD and updated the firmware with it. It all went flawlessly and did not wipe the drive.
If I undestand this installation guide correctly, Samsung Magician does not support AMD chipsets with AMD drivers, which is what I have on my system.

Anyhow, thanks for the replies, guys. I'm glad to have my new SSD up and running with the latest firmware now. smile.gif
