30gb drives showing additional 30gb uncallocated?

Confused. I have a stack of 30gb Fujitsu MHS2030AT 30gb 2.5" IDE hard drives, formatting them all and sellin' em. Noticed one of them formatted as 24gb, instead of the 27.8 or so it should have, so I opened up the Disk Managment tool in Windows (7 home premium) and saw 31gb of unallocated space as well as the 24gb of NTFS formatted space.

Thought it might have been a fluke so I tried another drive, same make and mode, and the same thing happened (although this time it was a 27.95 / 27.94gb split)

When I tried to expand one of them to take the whole 55.9 or so GB's, the drive formatted and showed as a full 60gb hard drive. Tried formatting it again, unchecking the "Quick format" option, format failed, drive won't read or format now. (don't care about the lost drive, I have a stack of them, just really curious)

Screenshot taken after I tried a non-quick format - showed up as raw and unreadable, at least by the windows tools I'm using.

Same thing happened on 7 30gb flavors of this drive so far.

I tried a 40gb version, a MHT2040AT, it detected properly as 40gb with nothing 'extra' as unallocated space.

All drives were formatted in NTFS with 4096b allocation, as defaulted by Windows, if this helps.

I believe your drive is failing but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: I had the issue once before but can't remember if it was failing or if the formatting software was crap. It was 2 years ago.

7 hard drives failing in the same way? None of them are clicking or anything, all spooled up quietly and smoothly...

Probably not then ... Put in another PC or format.

Please re-read the original post, I think you are missing the point of this thread. I don't really care about the fate of the drives, just wondering what could be causing 7 identical hard drives to show the same strange behavior. Of the 19 drives I've formatted tonight, these 7 Fujitsu MHT2030AT's were the only ones show this issue, also they were the only 30gb drives I formatted (rest were 40's, 60's, and 80's)

Recap:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Stock windows tools (Disk Management, and right-click + format in My Computer)
4096B allocation, NTFS formatting
Generic External 2.5" USB2.0 IDE enclosure (receiving power straight from the PSU's 5v rail, USB was not enough to power the drives had to solder on a new source)

Have not tried any third party programs, because like I said I am only curious why it's happening, I'm not really looking for a solution.

Good point, I guess I'm just too tired and not reading everything through. Sorry about that.
