MacBook Pro Overheating, will downgrading from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard Help?

Thread Starter
I've got a 2010 i7 MacBook Pro that routine hits the mid 90's (C). This wouldn't be so bad, but when playing LoL, for example, the framerate is severely impacted (while I assume the CPU is downclocked).

I've already taken the computer apart to reapply thermal paste (whoever applied the original paste did an absolutely horrific job, it was such a mess and there were large chunks on the CPU itself). This seems to have only helped cool it by a few degrees (tops out around 90 now) but I've still got the framerate issues everytime I try to play a game. The issue is present in both OS X as well as W7 bootcamp.

My question is whether anybody knows if SL runs cooler than ML. I know the system requirements are lower, but I can't find any objective benchmarks documenting hardware requirements and performance between SL-L-ML.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

Are the fans all working? I've known some macbooks to get hot but that's pretty darn hot.

I doubt downgrading to 10.7 or 10.6 would make a difference if the issue is present in windows bootcamp.

Have you got any fan control software running? Speedfan for windows works well and smcFanControl for OSX is a good option

I've got a fan control preference pane that allows me to adjust the temps at which the fans spin up. While playing games they both hit around 6000 RPM.

I should also add that I play on a hard surface, and that the rear exhaust vent isn't blocked.

The mobile versions of the core i series cpus are rated for 10C higher TJ max. Things to check for your MBP

Take of the bottom plate and blast all that dust out. Next check to make sure the fans are in working order and the dust is removed from them. Finally, this is more involved and you are going to need a torx screw driver set for this, replace the time with a non conductive brand (MX2/3/4 word well).

Remember the form factor that you are working in is going to run hotter and the cpu and gpu are mobile variants that are rated to run at higher temps.

I certainly don't mind that the temps are hitting those levels, I'm just concerned that the framerate is being so severely impacted. The issues present themselves regardless of the settings and, again, when the computer is on a solid surface. I've taken the entire motherboard apart and cleaned it, the fans, and the heatsink, and again saw only a few degrees Celsius difference in temps at load.

I'm probably just going to have to deal with it, but I thought other people might have had success downgrading to an older OS.

MacBook Pro's just run hot while gaming. I've got a mid '09 MBP that I played BFBC2 on and that sucker got hot.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 90

It's asking a lot for one of these tiny heat sinks to keep any MacBook (Pro or otherwise) to maintain reasonable temps when gaming.

I am with BulletSponge, the temps for some of the MPBs can be pretty high. it is a small heatsink they put in there so that does not help. You might have done all you can do. What year/model is the computer?

It's the mid-2010 15" MBP (it has an i7 2.66 and GeForce GT 330M).

As I said, the original thermal paste was woefully applied... it was an all around mess, and reapplying it got me about 5 degrees cooler.

I cleaned out the fans but I'm resigned to not being able to do much else. I'll try to hunt around for a fan utility that will let me manually crank both fans to max.

Thanks all for the help.
