Began my adventure into OC land, and now I ask for guidance and help

So finally I OC something worth talking about . I took my P-D 945 to 4.25ghz. At the moment I do not know really what I should be looking at. So here's some info and if you need to know anything to help me with my settings, for safety reasons, etc. Let me know plz.

I turned up the FSB to 250 and had some minor issues with stability, windows not loading etc. After reading a bit I thought I should take my Vcore setting from AUTO, and set it to 1.4v. It has been pretty much stable since then as far as I can tell. I am running right now prime95 torture test to see how well she is holding up, and current temps are 60-61*c according to Asus PC Probe. The Vcore voltage is hanging right around 1.4v as well. So it would appear my settings are working, and I believe 60*c is within safety/spec for OC'n this cpu.

Now my ram speed is currently at 833mhz. I believe that is infact a bit lower than the 1:1 ratio I keep hearing about, and it should be at 1000mhz instead. In the bios options I have an option to turn up the ram speed to 1000mhz, but I get stability issues. I tried running higher voltages but would not go past 2.1v cause I'm scared and did not 100% know what I'm doing hehe. With that said, I turned it back down to 833mhz and set the memory voltage to AUTO again.

I have not touched anything with manual ram timings, since I have NO CLUE about how those work and what to set them as. I've read articles and posts and all sorts of stuff but still dont understand how those timings work and what they do exactly (by timings I mean settings like 4-4-4-12 and what have you). I also have not touched the PCI bus settings speed and voltage, nor the PCI-e settings for speed and voltage.

Specs for my setup are in my sig like everyone elses. I have a Tower 112 cooling the cpu now, and a nice big fan that really cranks.

Thanks for any help in my next step or adventure. FYI to... I got some balls to try things a bit recklessly, but would prefer to not blow my new toys up!!

best thing you can do is loosen the timeings to 5-5-5-15 then u might have a good chance of getting higher ram speeds
what ram do you have and what was the stock speed

take ur time getting the ram up if it gets unstable up the voltage on the ram up alittle
and what are to stock voltages on that ram

Stock voltage on my ram I'm unsure of. And honestly at this point I'm unsure of what speed my ram is... I was 100% positive that it was 667mhz when I put the rig together ( think that is pc5300). But when I put my new cpu you in today I noticed my ram was @ 533mhz, which is pc4300 . I'm going to have to pull out a chip and check it.

I also have been sitting here, and I think the 833mhz setting is infact unstable.. bleh. I had a problem rebooting the pc just now a few times, then finally it booted up to windows. I got a weird error also, said one of my windows files were corrupt which I highly doubt is the case, since it still does boot fine the other times. I lowered the ram setting to 750mhz (next step down) and rebooted 5 times in a row no problems.

I'm going to get the ram info right now... brb after I reboot again hehe.

Alright well I took some pics of the ram, here they are:

By seeing the pictures I obviously have 512mb pc5400 ddr2, 675mhz... looks like the stock timings would be 3-3-2-8, and I'm guessing stock voltage is 1.5v. I'm running 4 dimms, in dual channel configuration if that at all matters. They are matched pairs, purchased that way.

And here is a little write up I found about it in pdf format:
http://www.corsair.com/corsair/produ...12A-5400UL.pdf

Thanks again peeps!

This stuff is weird lol... I lowered everything a bit to make sure. Have the ram ~700mhz (forget exact might have been 707mhz actually) and the proccessor @ 4.0ghz now, fsb 235. Trying to play it safe... damn bad habits of jumping in over my head getting to me. Everything seems fine so far.

As you can see in my sig, I have a 920 at 4ghz. The cpu voltage is 1.38 for mine. I can get it to 4.7ghz (questionable if is stable), but I am happy with it at 4ghz.

Now for the things I think you were struggling with.

My bios calls it multipliers, some call it dividers, but memory will make you crazy figuring it out.

With the stock FSB of 200, if your memory was on auto, it should come up at 667. The operative word is should. If you started there and pushed the FSB to 300, you memory speed would be at 798/800. That may be too fast for that memory without more volts. The default voltage for DDR2 is 1.8v but you will need to check with corsair to see what yours is.

The timings they publish are the spd timings for 533. The ones for 667 and 800 will be significantly lower. Run cpuz and look at the memory tab and the spd tabs. That will give you that info.

Now for what I think might help. At least this helps mine. My memory has been tested to run at 900mhz, but it wont run there with my presler. So when I want to overclock up above 4ghz, I put the memory on a 1:1. They call that a 2 multiplier on my board. That puts the memory at 300x2 (ddr2) when the FSB is at 300x4 (1200). Try that and see where it gets you. You can always go back down and boost it up and test more later.

Before you do any of this, download memtest86+ iso and burn it to a CD. That is a bootable memory test that will keep you from destroying your operating system volume if your memory is out of spec. You can boot it and run it for 20 minutes or so before you boot into windows. That will be much safer. Memory timings and speeds out of spec will crap on your windows volume faster than anything else.

Enjoy!!

HEre is some CPU-Z screen shots... I dont know how to set my mobo to 1:1 , according to cpu-z its 3:5 at the moment. At least the proccessor speed is nice .

Anything else I should be concerned about with the info from these pictures? I know the voltage is high for the cpu, it fluctuates from 1.38-1.44... BIOS is set to 1.385v

Looks pretty good. What is the voltage on the ram set to?

I imagine you will have to slow the memory down to get the FSB any higher. Maybe try to get it to 3:4. How are your temps?

I have my 920 watercooled so it is chilly even at 100 percent load.

Edit....Just for reference.........my FSB is at 288 x 4.........memory is at 384 x 2 (3:4)........cpu voltage is 1.38 and memory is 2.2. Pcie 100........everything else on auto. My multiplier is 14.

If you could get your FSB to 288 with the memory at 3.4 like mine, you'd be running at 4.9 ghz. I bet it will do it with ease at around 1.4v

Highest temps I saw were 61*c for a second yesterday on prime 95 stress test. I let it run for about 10 minutes. Pretty much sat at 59-60*c for that time.

You really don't want to let it go much higher than that. What cooler do you have on it?

Also, I edited the post above this and added some info.
