AMD took the wraps off a new high-end reference-design videocard at the end of the company’s GDC press briefing Tuesday night: The dual-GPU Radeon 7990.

Details are exceedingly sparse: Matt Skynner, general manager of AMD’s graphics business unit, simply held up the card for the audience to see. “This is the first public showing,” Skynner said. “We’re not saying much about it other than it’s two series-7900 GPUs on a single card, and it’s whisper quiet.”

The Radeon HD 7990 will compete with Nvidia’s Titan for fastest video card on the planet when the card ships (unless Nvidia manages to come out with a dual-Titan card).

The HD 7990 already beats the Titan, but I don't see the point of comparing them when one is single GPU and the other is Dual GPU. wth.gif

Expect to see cards like this at retail before the end of the first half of the year, because AMD is expected to ship its Radeon HD 8000 series GPUs in the second half.

This is double great news thumb.gif

Great news Capt.

Great news Capt.

The author made a mistake by comparing it to the Titan since both GPUs cost $1000. The actual comparison should be against the GeForce GTX 690 which also costs $1000 US.

Looks very much like the S10000.

I wonder what they've been working at for all this time? The driver side perhaps?

Also this little snippet is quite misinformed:
Quote:

nope, it will compete with the 690 that's Nvidias fastest graphics card. And dual GPUs aren't competitors to single ones really...

Price defines comparison.

Makes me sad this is going to be near the $1000 mark though.

Will be way faster than titan though.

I am so happy it has more then 1 fan! I really hate having 1 fan on a dual GPU video card, I hope it runs a lot cooler with more fans biggrin.gifthumb.gif

In the second part of the news they mentioned the Sky series of GPU's for cloud gaming.
Looks like AMD wants to take on Nvidia GRID from the start. Now it's just a matter of what kind of cloud gaming service will use them.

Too long. Might as well wait and just throw it under the moniker of 8990

Not necessarily. For example, you can't compare a $50,000 sports car with a $50,000 touring sedan. Sure they're both identically-priced automobiles, but they're meant for different things.

In the same way, you really can't compare single-GPU (i.e. "touring sedan") and dual-GPU (i.e. "sports car") cards as they have differing operational characteristics and end-user experiences/expectations.
