ASUS M3N: Maximum RAM

Thread Starter
Hi,

I currently own an ASUS M3000-N (specs here), with 1x256mb+1x512mb memory config.

Asus datasheets specify that the maximum configuration is 1024mb, using 2x512mb, and so do the kingston and crucial memory configurators.

Using AMIDiag (american megatrends, the maker of the bios), the software reports that both available memory banks support up to 1024mb each.

What I would like to know is how reliable is data from the chipset (i.e. from AMIDiag)? Is it likely or not that it is possible to place 1Gb sticks in my machine?!

I don't really think it's possible if ASUS themselves say it.
I've heard about AMIDiag and it doesn't really give trustable results

When I questioned ASUS they said they "recommended" (I'm quoting here) those values.

They also didn't state it as absolute truth, even after I asked them to clarify the "recommended".

But I understand what you mean; so there isn't any way to check what are the computer system's limits using software (i.e. without trying)?

Well, I went and bought a 1Gb stick to try it out (I made sure I can return it ), and it doesn't work.

I only tried it on the most accessible bank, because to get to the other one I have to basically strip out the laptop ...

Bummer ..
