I'm not trying to invalidate your arguments but i'm trying to bring everything to the table to help our friend to make his own right decision and it seems you wouldn't allow it ... someone buying intel doesn't mean you were wrong about your choice. I know you are defending your favorite brand but your profile reads AMD overclocker ... his doesn't .. he just want advice for a first build for his nephew, don't make it personnal.

TDP doesn't mean power consumption, that is only a rough guide on heat dissipation.

Guys guys guys come on. Can't we have single thread without amd vs intel or nvidia vs amd flamewar??

Simply put

Intel = higher single threaded performance, only dual core, hyperthreading

Amd = higher multi threaded performance, cheaper, six cores (more future proof considering next gen consoles are 8-core?)

Imo amd would be better in this case.
For the six cores and the lower price point.

sorry. I'm not pushing this any further. Maybe I'm biased as well ...

But perhaps EPiiKK you can developp your argument about nex-gen consoles as I don't see the connexion ? Is it related to game developpement ?

Well next gen consoles will have 8 core amd apus, game devs will start optimizing their games for more than 4 threads, which atm is the most common way to go...
But it could take a few years to get to the point where it would make a noticeable difference

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H $73
RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 2x4GB DDR3-1600 $48
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660 GV-N660OC-2GD $188 after $20 MIR
HDD: Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB $72

PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX430 $35 after $10 MIR
CASE: NZXT Source 210 $45

Total: $609 after $30 of MIRs.

A bit late. But I agree with this build 100%

I'm not a amd fanboy by any means I've had could tless Intel computers and would love to get my hands on a good unlocked i5 but amd would be better in his case amd will blow Intel away at budget performance

Go AMD for this build. I'd even suggest a Phenom II x4 over the i3, just for the increased core count.
