Things got funky.....

I fear my SOYO dragon kt600 may have died;

I got a stick of512, and was configuring my system - to get the best possible timings.

I was also sorting out some bluescreen errors, (which most likely had something to do with the timings - I was thinking)

Then it happeded;

I put my stick of 256 in alone.... nothing,

then I tried my 512, nothing, (I had reset the bios proir to this).

Then when I turned off, and turned on the rig once more... I smelled it! Something was burning.

I plugged out my rig in like 2 secs after it happened,
took out every PCI card and all,
looked down into the case.. made sure nothing was shorting
Looked again!

And gave it power.... I smelt it again!

At this time I took out the board completly, and put it on an insulated surface... andhave been trying everything since then... still nothing.

The smell kinda smelt like a bad cap... butI'm not sure.

Anyone know how to measure capacitance?

Just guessing... but first try another PSU, or jump the current PSU and turn it on...smell anything?

Thats the thing man... I dont smell a farn thing now!

My mind ran accross the PSU, esp because I noticed from time to time, that the 12v out would flow up to 13.26 or so (cant remember exactly), but I know that when it went to that reading... the mobo's util Made it red (signalling that it was too much voltage!, anything red in that monitoring util isnt good! :|)
So I'm here wondering if the darn PSU over-volted or something

OR if that 13v+ is just a really good reading that the util ... you know, didnt think I should/would get.

Ihave a lil 250 wat, I'm going to try that one when I get home (just the board ect).

But here's another theory;
I have this MSI board that has a few... Issues, but it normally comes up with any working chip that I put in there.

When I tried the 2 working chips (750 and 1.3ghz) that I have.... I got nothing!

So its either really the PSU.... or the darn soyo tained those chips! .

As I said though... I'd really like to find out how to measure the capacitance of a capacitor...
Anyone know how to go about that with a volt meter?

Pull the PS main 20/24 pin moldex, jump the green to a ground (black) and have a shiff to see if it's the stinky issue.

Thanks, but I know badcaps.net and that the first place I turned lol.

They dont have what I want :| - to find out how to use a voltmeter to test capacitance, so I can determine if its the cap (because my caps arent showing any physical symptoms).

Everything I keep finding is saying that a voltmeter isn't designed to correctly test them...but there is probably a way...still searching...did you find this read??

Thanks for the link dude, but I get "Bad request" when loading it... must have died lol.

Duke,! whats that you say man?

Is that " Connect the Green (on the MBs power out from PSU ) to a black.. and then smell the psu and see if its the same smell?

i.e.. should that "shiff" be "sniff"? :|

Just to mention, so far, what Ive been reading is that in order to check the health of a capacitor I need an ESR meter.
But I'm pretty sure than any volt meter than can measure capacitance will work.
Prob is... I dont know how to do that with a volt meter :|

Dam its so lame having a dead PC

Well, Tried another PSU, still no go.

Good thing is though, that the CPU isnt dead, i tried it in the board that works SOMETIMES and it came up.

But thge darn soyo... it seems to be gone.

The only conclusion I can come to is that when I used that toothbtush to clean the RAM slot (the tbrush didnt look too... clean), it dropped something conductive in the slot.
I see a slight marking on the RAM contact, but hech, I've seen those before and It could be anything.

So I guess I'm just machine-less now... in need of a new mobo.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good o'clocking board?
