Why less parts? The real difference is how the data is stored on the platters. Not really resulting in less parts, but possibly a slightly faster access to the data and a higher density of the data on the platters.

Seagate or Western Digital... does not really matter that much. Both make excellent, reliable hard drives. I love my 250MB KS drivers. (all four of 'em)

In the past, I would not go with Maxtor Drives, but now Maxtor is owned by Seagate, so hopefully the quality is going up. And Chozart is right, its really a toss-up between WD or Seagate.

What does recording have to do with the amount of parts used

Who makes a 3MB cache? It should be 2, 4, 8, 16... 3 is very PC unfriendly.
Once again...

I thought perp doesn't use less parts, but makes the platter denser, thus putting more storage space on the platter.

Uhh it looks like emachines does, as thats the speed of my hard drive. i hate when people like you make me feel as though i need to take a digital pic just for evidence
post #19 of 19
Uhh.. cache is not a measurement of speed.... cache is onboard memory on the hard drive (think a RAM chip on a hard drive). 3MB is indeed an unusual amount for a hard drive. Also, as far I know, e-machines does not make its own hard drives, but just uses (cheap) models from the usual manufactorers (Maxtor, WD, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi...whomever).

What make/model is your hard drive? That'll help us.
