Control 4 3-pin fans with a splitter cable

Thread Starter
I am planning to cool a radiator with 4 120mm NB-eLoop fans.
These fans are each connected with a 3 Pin Molex with rpm signal.

Will I be able to control the fan speed (same for all 4 fans) with this 5 Fan PWM Controller connected to a 4-pin PWM header on the motherboard?

Yes, as long as you don't draw too much current.

How much current are you drawing with the fans?

What's your motherboard PWM connector rated for?

Unless your using some insane fans, you usually don't have to worry about over-drawing current.

Yes, I'm using a similar Akasa splitter with my fans except it's powered by molex instead of SATA.

since the adapter you linked has it's own separate power you should be fine.
if you connected all the fans to one header without plugging in that sata power connection it wouldn't work as you intend.

Thanks guys!

The motherboard is ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe and I can't find the specs for the PWM headers in the manual...

The NB eLoop 1600 rpm fans are rated at 1,01W but as l0max mentioned the adapter has it's own separate power. I just wanted to be sure that the PWM signal from the 3-pin fan cables are connected through the 4-pin adapter.

You will need to use PWM versions of eLoop fans with that splitter, if your fans have a 3-pin connectors they are not PWM controlled and will always run at full speed with the splitter.

Correct.

The 3 pin fans are not PWM controlled.

To take advantage of that splitter's 4 pin connections, you'll need 4 pin PWM fans.

The alternative, if you want to use the 3 pin fans you already have for example, is to forgo PWM and adjust the fan speed manually.
I'd roll with a 20w expansion slot knob and a couple Y splitters. IDK how much current your fans draw, mine are all low power and kept at minimum speed 24x7, you may need a higher rated fan controller.

The Asus Fan Xpert 2 software allows you to control 3-pin fans in the same manor as 4-pin fans and he has an Asus board.

That doesn't help if he is using that PWM splitter since voltage to the fans will be coming straight from PSU instead of a motherboard header. To use 3-pin fans and an Asus chassis fan header he will need a splitter for 3-pin fans.

This makes sence! I remember having troubles with 3-pin case fans (Fractal Design Silent Series R2 140mm) connected through the 8 Way PWM Splitter that came with my Swiftech H220.
I have no trouble regulating the speed of these case fans with the ASUS Fan Xpert 2 as long as they are connected directly to the motherboard header.

Thanks a lot for clearing this up. I will use 4-pin PWM cabled fans for this radiator.
