HD6950 higher overclock

Thread Starter
Currently I have an XFX HD6950 2gb (cannot unlock to hd6970) running Core 1.2v, Clock 925mhz, and Mem 1400mhz with +20% power, this runs really nice load temps are 70C at 60% fan speed . I really want to reach a 1Ghz clock but how far can I push the voltage before it becomes too dangerous? The current cooler on it is crap for the most part but I want to see it run at 1ghz before I get an Accelero Twin Turbo

I don't think ull have access to the voltage on that card other then the amd catalyst powertune (which is the same thing I use) I think u can unlock voltage in afterburner but iam not sure what the safe limit is voltage wise for your card....It seems like u already have a decent overclock on your card for being a 6950 its running a higher core and memory then a 6970- if I were u I wouldn't push anymore, but its up to you

The general rule of thumb is to keep the temps low (less than 85) and the voltage at 1.3v or less. I have no issue with running 1.3v personally. It could possibly degrade your card quickly, however. I've heard horror stories of pretty much just that. In addition, your card may not be able to reach 1ghz core at all on air cooling. Sometimes no matter how high you put the voltage, you can't get more stability. Sometimes the best solution is actually lower the voltage a tad. To summarize, you're really best off just playing around with settings, testing for stability and keeping an eye on temps. You'll find your max OC soon enough. Hopefully, you'll luck out and get your 1ghz core.

I have 2x hd 6950 with a single shader unlock but I can run them only up to 855 mhz stable. My memory is only stable up to 1295 mhz. I have 2 scythe musashi cooler and my temps are 80-100°C. In BF3 for example in the aircraft carrier mission it's pushing 100% load on my to video adapter and my temps are 100°C. The good point it's looking great! The BF3 mission and my video adapter!

So I ran my card at 1.3v 1000Mhz +20% power. When I run furmark 1080p preset it starts off ok however at about 20% through furmark the clock drops to 500Mhz, my computer does not crash and there is no display driver error. Do you think this is because the card cant sustain that clock rate? temp of the card when is happens is cool like upper 40's C
post #6 of 6
Yes. But it's strange that your temps is so low. When my temps is too high the clock also degrade.
