New to DSLR, need a little advice

Thread Starter
I am looking to purchase a camera in the near future. Unfortunately, it will have to be from Target (just received a bunch of gift cards from a baby shower).

I am coming from a cheap Samsung P&S, and am looking at either the Nikon 3100 or Canon T3 as I would like to keep the purchase under $500.

The camera will be used to photo my upcoming daughter. Not too worried about a steeper learning curve as it gives me something new to tinker with and learn.

I am leaning toward the Canon as my father has a T2i and a few lenses so there could be some swapping, but am not excluding the Nikon if it is a better buy.

Nikon D3100 $449

Canon T3 $474

The D3100 is theoretically better but as you already have an option to use your father's Canon lenses, I think going for the T3 is a better idea. The D3100 doesn't have a built-in focus motor where the T3 does, so if you buy the D3100 the autofocus lenses are gonna be quite expensive, but Canon lenses are relatively cheaper.

If the regular T3i is an option, look into that. The T3 is basically a watered down version of the T3i, and for the difference in price I think it's worth it to go with the higher quality camera.

I wish I had the money to move the the T3i, but with the baby coming, it was a struggle just to get to the $500 mark.

With my uses, would it be better for me to just get a good P&S? Something along the lines of the SX500 or so? Or even the Samsung WB100 (on sale at Fry's and would be the amount I was going to add to my gift cards. Would allow me to use the gift cards on actual baby stuff as they were intended.)

My first DSLR was a Canon XSi with 18-55mm lens that i bought in 2008 and I had loads of fun with it as well as making some excellent photos. I don't think you can go too wrong with either camera, but what I would highly recommend is to try both the T3 and the D3100 out in person before making a purchase decision, if you have not already done so. To me, the Canon ergonomics are much nicer (shutter button and dial placement, etc.), but it's really personal preference. Now I own a 7D and some L lenses. smile.gif

If you were intending on buying baby supplies with the gift cards, then by all means do that! But, that doesn't mean you can't get a DSLR with the cash you already wanted to buy a camera with. Refurbished and used are both perfectly fine options for buying cameras. My first DSLR was a refurb model and I couldn't tell a difference from a new camera and it worked great.

You can buy the D3100 as a refurb with the 18-55 VR for $360. A used D5000 with the same lens would be about $300. My knowledge of the Canon refurb and used market isn't as extensive, but there are just as many options.

I am all DSLR and I have loads of Canon equipment, but for what your going to use the camera for I think a nice Canon point and shoot would be best.
my wife has a Canon point and shoot and takes very nice pics of our grand daughter all the time, her pics are almost as good if not the same as my $1,500 DSLR puts out (that was the price for body only).
so buy some baby stuff and get a P&S.smile.gif

besides if your dad has a DSLR you can bet he will be taking millions of pics of his grand child, 2 of my office walls are covered from floor to ceiling of 8X10 framed photos of my grand daughter.

This is what I am figuring as well. If I need to borrow his camera for a shoot, it is not a problem. I picked up the Samsung WB100 as it fit my budget well and had all the features I wanted for a do it all camera. Picked up the camera, a 16gb class 10 ush-1 sdhc card, 4 rechargeable batteries and charger and a tripod for just under $200. thumb.gif

I was looking at CL and ebay as well. Some killer deals on there for camera gear. Unfortunately, my wife has a serious aversion to buying used things. I am a hardcore thrift shopper and almost never buy anything new (other than HDDs), but it is taking some work to get her on board. This one was a no go as soon as I said I was looking at used.
