Windows 8 for HTPC ?

Thread Starter
I have been using Windows 8 on my HTPC since it was released, and was enjoying it. Seemed to do everything I wanted, but the past month it has been buggy. I was curious if anyone else used Win8 for their HTPC? If not, what OS do you use?

I have been thinking of going to Linux smile.gif - my HTPC is just used for movies, a small minecraft server, and very little gaming (D3, WoW, minecraft mostly).

I have been using Windows 8 for my HTPC for a while now, also, and have really enjoyed it. Some of the apps are actually really useful and interesting, but I also still use XBMC for watching ripped movies and Spotify (there's no app yet) for music. I've also thought about going to Linux but I rip my DVDs/Blu Rays with my HTPC, too, and I currently use AnyDVD which is Windows only. If I ever move my movies to a server I might consider switching to Linux but honestly I haven't had any problems with Windows 8 so far. What kind of bugs are you seeing? I guess my biggest complaint is that many of the apps don't support keyboard input which means that using a remote is a no go and has forced us to use our wireless keyboard a lot more, but that might be better in the long run.

I tried XBMC as well but noticed that it was a little laggy when decoding movies - may be my system specs though (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.7ghz, 6gb DDR2 memory).

One major and annoying bug is that about once a week none of my apps load and I have to do the windows 8 system refresh thing. I can't find a cause as I only use 99% of the time to watch movies/dvds that I rip myself, the other 1% is playing minecraft, D3 or WoW (extremelly rare though).

Your system spec is fine for playback of 1080p stuff so long as you have a capable gpu to do the work- you didn't say what it was but any nvidia gpu from the 200 series would be plenty good enough. I know this because I had a Core 2 Duo @ 2.13GHz with 2GB of DDR 2 RAM with a GT240 that played bluray (e.g 16GB 1080p files) and HDTV perfectly.

Can't say for windows 8 though as not used it yet but that would be the prime candidate for problems from my point if view.

Linux is what I use for my media centres and when its setup properly its great but it can be a PITA when things go wrong... For example if you mess up your graphics drivers or xorg.conf setup your system may boot to a command line instead of a desktop which when you're new to it all can be somewhat tricky to resolve.

If you're thinking to try it out, I'd suggest Ubuntu initially although for various reasons I tend to use mythbuntu ir xbuntu. Mythtv is certainly worth checking out too.

Games-wise, unless there's a Linux version of the game on steam for example, you're not likely to get an enjoyable gaming experience in a Linux box! Fortunately there's Lways dual-boot!

Thats all great info - thanks. I will give that OS a try, I used to use Linux about 6-7years ago.

I have a GT430 card that I have connected to my TV running @ 1080.

I had Win 8 on my htpc for about two hours and took it right off, personally i think it sucks. Microsoft did better on there Windows Server 2012 Editions then Windows 8. I stick to straight Windows 7 using Windows Media Center and adding the Shark 007 Codec pack and it plays all my files and lets me watch tv with the tuner.
