What's so great about battlefield 3 ? - Page 8

Personally I bought BF3 because of the hype and the hype that it looked amazing.

I wasn't really impressed with either. The game looks good, but the constant lens flare like I was in a J.J. Abrams movie was extremely detrimental to the game play. The game play felt a little slower than CoD, which is a good thing, but the openness felt extremely dull for me who wants to learn the game.

I can't pick up a game and be awesome like it as a lot of people can. I have to learn it. Spawning, then running around for 5 minutes to only get killed in 2 seconds to some level 69 gun wizard isn't fun or exciting for me anymore. Maybe it would be when I was a teen and could tolerate sitting at a game and grinding at it until I became awesome at it like before.

I also just have a severe bias to arena style FPS. I grew up on Halo PC. The only FPS that really felt alike that arena style recently is Tribes: Ascend, which is now pretty dead.

Battlefield 3 has all elements of gameplay in 1 package, here is the run and gun section TDM:

Now the tactical aspect:

Team work depends on your class, and what needs to be done, i managed to keep the enemy at bay whilst the main tank driver fires the pay load.

We worked together all game, then got accused of baseraping, which clearly was not happening.

now THAT is action ( -_____-)

BF3 is in between , CoD and ArmA .... and guess what , its in the sweet spot

am i going to play ArmA 3 ? ... probably not , not because i cant , its just because its not a game , its a simulator with multiplayer support lol , and the "Missions" could take hours to complete , the whole mission is like a "instance" in wich you cant go AFK because you are needed to complete the objective , specially if you are designated as a Demo man , guide guy , pilot guy ... etc, etc

these people play "HARDCORE" and take it seriously lol

i dont care what people thinks about BF3 or ArmA , what it does grinds my gears , is people talking about not knowing the game itself ...

@boredgunner

just go and play Battlefield 3

I have my opinion on ARMA, i find it intolerably boring, you cannot compare a wannabe simulator to real life mate wink.gif

this is the reason why CoD/BF were made. some people prefer "game" some prefer "sim". generally speaking most people have played "game" and have had enough of it and they prefer more of a "sim" type gameplay. you on the other hand prefer more of an escapist type gameplay which means CoD type game would be far more enjoyable to you.

different type of gameplay and different types of enjoyment. that's why there are different genre's of games on the market.

I also wouldn't say BF3 is in between Call of Duty and ArmA, it's meant to compete with CoD. The in-between game would be Red Orchestra 2. The biggest difference between CoD and BF3 is that BF3 has vehicles and bigger maps (in addition to small ones, so it actually has some variety in this regard unlike current CoD games). It's a bit weird that these two features aren't enough to put it ahead of CoD in terms of sales.

And tactics in BF3? Yea right. I can average a 4.0 KD by run-and-gunning with the UMP40 or PDW. It takes zero skill. In Arma turning a blind corner will probably get you killed.

Sniping in Arma is WAY more reward than in BF3 as well. In BF, getting a 300-400m headshot is impressive. In Arma, you could have just used your AR, because like the real world, they are zeroed at 300m.

Just to address this quickly, I really agree with the first quote in general when it comes to Normal BF3. Which is why I play Hardcore exclusively. No miracle sit in an isolated corner and auto-heal. If you're not a medic, you better hope one can get to you. However, BF4 could improve here by let's say, setting a health cutoff, below which you will bleed out if you don't get help from a medic. (Maybe non-medics could carry a single use kit that would stabilize them though?) I know I've gone on some pretty good streaks with my screen all greytones because I'm a mosquito bite away from dying, which is kinda silly.

The same applies to vehicles in Hardcore mode - no auto repairs, etc. If you're not a mechanic, your choices are to go down with the ship (tank) or bail out. Woe unto the idiot on my team who bails out of his armor in an enemy infested area and lets an enemy engineer repair and steal it, because I'm sure as h3ll going to TK his sorry ass for being a moron.

If you really want the experience, play Hardcore on a server with no mini-map. Suddenly you can't simply know that a guy was just around the corner and go in guns blazing. While the pace of play doesn't slow to ARMA levels, it certainly change things up a bunch.

As for tactics, it really depends on the game mode. Are there tactics to Team Death Match or Gun Master? Nope, those are for simple run and gun stuff. If you want tactics, play Rush, Capture the Flag or better yet, Squad Rush. Hopefully BF4 gives us back in game VOIP, because the loss of VOIP is one of the single biggest factors in the decline of teamwork from BF2 to BF3. Squad by squad VOIP in BF2 really allowed for true on the fly tactical planning and adjustments. The only way to really get close to that in BF3 is to be on a TS server with other players.

Sure, ARMA sniping is more effective at long range. It's a different game and supposedly a simulator, which means that a really good sniper can devastate an entire squad, just like they can in reality. But BF3 has to balance reality with mechanics that make the game's playing field a bit more level. Otherwise half the servers on maps like Operation Firestorm would end up with sniper battles across the valley from one ridge to the other. And boy, that'd make for an entertaining game, as well as good teamwork. rolleyes.gif

Lastly, I'm calling total BS on the 4.0 K/d crap. The only way you or anyone else is getting a 4.0 K/d is by being a vehicle whore. Even the best players out there don't get close to that:

#1 Player in Kills Worldwide: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/soldier/KAlN1/stats/317873136/ - 2.89 K/d

Of the top 30 players in Kills Worldwide, only 7 of them have K/d ratios of more than 4...

CoD and BF3 are two completely different experiences. Though they are both modern day military shooters, one has substance, the other doesn't, one innovates, the other doesn't, one encourages team play, the other doesn't.

One is casual, the other isn't.
