Internet? Uverse, Cable, etc?

So I currently have the slowest ATT DSL internet at 768k, very slow but it is there cause we hit a rough patch financially and needed to save money.

Things have turned around now and were looking to speed things up. However, Uverse is offered in our area now and I was told the only way to speed up my internet was to get Uverse and pay a $100 equipment fee...which I am not too happy about. but $36/mo for 6mbps is not too bad.

I called my cable company a while ago and their basic internet is 5mbps and they would not give me any promotions since I was not getting television and is $51 a month. I am going to call about this again because I could have gotten a bimbo who really did not know anything.

But anyways, should I even consider the Uverse?

I also used to have AT&T dsl basic. It was insanely slow. Couldn't even watch YouTube. I had just bought my house and the area was new, so dsl was the only thing available at the time.

Now I went with uverse. The day it was available actually. For the first 12 months ill be paying $29 a month. After the first year it will jump to $49 or 39, not too sure.

Went from 75kb/s to 1500kb/s. According to speedtest net.

To answer your question. Yes, go with uverse . I have had 0 problems or outtages. The $100 is for the modem/router plus setup.

Yea the only reason I have much of a problem with the Equipment fee is cause I have a router of my own already and I have already paid an equipment fee in the past when I got DSL.

The modem/router they give you is garbage if you use wifi extensively.

You can hook up your current router to the the one they give you to offset it's terrible wireless capabilities.

Ouch on all those speeds. My local cable company offers a 18mbps connection for $55 a month, which puts in right in line with AT&T's Uverse Max Plus for speed and cost. However, per my speed tests, I'm actually seeing closer to 25mbps on average... Since I'm not a torrent whore, I don't see the need to step up to their 55mbps connection for $75 per month...

It really all depends on your local provider as far as reliability goes. Cox San Diego is pretty solid - I've had maybe 2 small outages in 2 1/2 years.

My computer is plugged into the router and my wife uses wifi mainly. So that wont be too much of a problem.

Well they just made the argument for me:

ATT 3.0mbps is $36/mo
Cable 10mbps is $30/mo
