Build help for the old man

Thread Starter
My pop loves to play his flight simulator games... there's a new come coming out that's pretty graphics/sound intensive and he'd like to upgrade his old computer.

He needs a CPU, graphics, memory, mobo, PSU (probably), and would LIKE a sound card. A solid state HD might not be bad either.

There isn't really a strict limit, but nothing too fancy.

I'd like to go intel, but honestly, he won't know the difference and AMD is a little cheaper... what do you guys think?

Here's what I've come up with on PCPartPicker: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/MEHB

Input would be great, I dont know much about sound cards.

I doubt he'll be needing aftermarket coolers on anything. No plans whatsoever to OC.

I'd replace the XFX with a Sapphire Vapor-X 7950. The cooler is definitely a lot better in terms of performance and in terms of noise. The rest look fine! Though if it's part of a combo deal then you should be good!

The on board graphics of the apu should run the simulater fine I know because I ran one before it was onr where you controlled plans smile.gif and that was on a a4 so you should have plenty enough graphics power on that a10 to run any simulated I would wait and maybe if he needs it buy the graphics card later

I think your missing some other parts of your build....

like ... HDD....Optical Drive... Case

still im goin to stick with the AMD APU...

since for flight stimulator dependent games he will mostly use this rig....the iGPU on an APU is already enough...

so i made another complete build for you to make it all complete ..

check this out http://pcpartpicker.com/p/MLzN

i didn't include an aftermarket cooler since you not goin to overclock it....

hope you like this thumb.gif

that looks like a very good build should be plenty although for 5$ more you can get this hard rice which has 500gb and it will go faster due to the large cache size http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005CT56R6/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?ref_=cm_cr_pr_product_top

what flight sim does your dad play? MS Flight Sim X needs to have fsx.cfg
edited to use more than dual core. I would consider overclocking
flight sims can be very cpu hungry (not very well multi-threaded).
if not True Spirit 120M for $30 shipped performs really well and is quiet.

More info on enabling Multi-threading in FSX SP2 here

If you are not going to use the gpu part of the APU (A10-5800K)
i would go with an FX-6300 (they cost the same, 6 cores vs 4 cores).

AMD FX-6300 95W, 6 core, 3.5GHz - $129.99 @TigerDirect (or newegg with code)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4904562&CatId=7339

ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0, 990X chipset, digi 6+2 VRM $109.99 after $20 rebate @NCIX
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=76030&vpn=M5A99X%20EVO%20R2.0&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1323

XFX 650W PRO650W Core Edition 80PLUS Bronze (Seasonic build) $72.99 @NCIX
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59616&vpn=P1650SNLB9&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1334

Thermalright True Spirit 140 $39.95 shipped or Macho Rev A $42.95 @ NansGamingGear
http://www.nansgaminggear.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TS-140
http://www.nansgaminggear.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MACHO-REV-A-BW

Patriot Viper 3 Red DDR3 8GB 1866MHz Dual (2x4GB) Modules PV38G186C9KRD $44.99 + $2.99 shipping
http://www.frys.com/product/7275473

I would pick up an SSD before a sound card or go for a FX-8320 $160 +shipping at Tiger Direct

I play fsx everyday, i have tons of add ons as well... When i was running it with my old radeon 6570 crossfire setup i was maxing the game out and getting 30 fps mostly, then i switched to radeon 6870 single and crossfire framerates stayed exactly the same! Now i run a radeon 6970 2gb and as u guessed it same framerates as my 6570! The biggest performance i got in fsx was increasing my fsb front side bus speed to 250, and got 12gb of ddr3 corsair vengence memory, it seems to love high cpu overclocks beacuse i can get close to 60 fps overclocked to 4.2 ghz!
