MSI 7950 TF3 VRM Temperature Holding Back Overclock

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a MSI 7950 TF3(7970PCB 6+8pin) and have had a hard time getting a good overclock due to VRM temperatures. My current overclock is 1080/1700@1.125v which brings VRM1 temperature into 90s *c. Any voltage higher brings the temperatures above 100 which will eventually cause a crash. Due to this, I cannot stably push my core past 1080, even at default memory clocks. Also, core temps never break the 70s *C

I have been looking at options to solve this problem that do not require me to buy an aftermarket cooler. One option I have thought was to remove the fans and replace them with 2 zip tied 120mm fans. I do not know if this will actually lower the VRM temperatures much.

I've also thought to replace the thermal tape under the VRM cooling bar thing with something like these:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16882/thr-167/Fujipoly_Extreme_System_Builder_Thermal_Pad_-_60_x_50_x_05_-_Thermal_Conductivity_110_WmK.html
I've saw another user use that under a water block and saw temperature drop, but i'm unsure what the results would be with the TF3.

Only thing i can think of is to try and fit a low profile heatsync on them but i haven`t looked at my tf3 clearence wise.
Personally i dont think bigger fans will help due to no possible heatsync actually being on them.

Yes, i did exactly what you did and replaced the stock thermal pad under the VRM heatsink with the Fujipoly Extremes and they do a good job holding maximal overclocks on my 560ti's, compared to stock. I also have an 80mm fan blowing right on top of the stock heatsink.

What kind of temp drop did you see? I put a spot fan towards the front of the card but haven't had time to test the temps. Tomorrow night hopefully

I didnt see any specific temp drops as my 560Ti doesnt have a VRM temp sensor, but before on stock pads i would have 75C on my core temps but after the pads i would only reach 70C core temp and have much more stability on a higher overclock like +200mhz OC
