[Anandtech]Handbrake to get QuickSync support - Page 2

Why? Handbrake has good encoding quality and tons of options, including a command line for those who need it. Most people don't need the likes of Adobe Media Encoder or the like, .

what would you recommend?

Handbrake isn't an encoder per se. It's just a GUI for several built-in encoders (Theora, x264, etc). It doesn't support all x264 CLI options. This is why anyone serious about encoding doesn't use it.

x264 Hi10P+ AVS + vdub (or your choice of AVS editor) + audio encoder will give you the versatility along with quality. For decoding, MadVR + MPC-HC or CCCP

It will be 2015 before Handbrake includes this in an official build. They have a lengthy delay between releases (sometimes more than a year), although they have nightly builds if you want it faster.

I personally use VidCoder (uses Handbrake libraries, but with a nicer UI) for encoding and MPC-HC with MadVR for playpack (VLC on Linux).

Regarding the Handbrake and future GPU/OpenCL application should be reminded of one related article. wink.gif

Do you need that crappy Virtu MVP to even use Quick Sync if you're using a video card?

I have the iGPU disabled in BIOS.

You do not need to install Virtual MVP to get Quick Sync. But you do need the IGPU enabled in the Bios+ IGPU drivers for quick sync to work.

I have 200 retail DVD's ripped 1:1 to VOB.. I was going to handbrake very high quality x264 rip to MKV, I did a test run and it looked pretty good. Settings below Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
handbrake-cli -i "M:\vob\I_ROBOT_16X9\I_ROBOT_16X9.Title1.vob" -t 1 -c 1 -o "M:\Movies10\I Robot 16x91.mkv" -f mkv --detelecine --decomb --strict-anamorphic -e x264 -q 15 --vfr -a 1 -E copy -B 0 -6 auto -R Auto -D 0 --gain=0 --audio-copy-mask none --audio-fallback ffac3 -x ref=6:weightp=1:rc-lookahead=10:me=umh:b-adapt=2:merange=32:bframes=5 --verbose=1

Thanks for an interesting alternative... any suggested CLI cmds you have used? I need to script it up and run over a weekend on a Xeon 12C/24T 3.3Ghz monster with 24GB ram (work machine).

Does file size matter to you? Having RF:15 (the -q flag for x264 CLI) is a bit low for DVD. You could easily push that to 18-19 (possibly higher) without any noticeable quality loss, but with a reduction in file size. If you upscale this on a high res monitor/TV you will probably want to keep it a bit lower though.

Funny you say that. The x264 developer himself has personally suggested Handbrake to me in the past on several occasions. Here's another example: http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1413684&postcount=3

Would you qualify him as "serious about encoding" ?

I agree with you about Quicksync, but you're wrong about Handbrake.

If you want to get technical, it's not a GUI, it's a Transcoder.

And so what if it doesn't support every single x264 CLI option (most of which were made for testing purposes and shouldn't even be used). For example:

http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1377077&postcount=5

Here's another post he makes that pretty much shoots down your CLI is better misconception:

At least on Windows, Handbrake could be considered both a GUI or a transcoder, depending on whether you are talking about the whole multiprocess application or only what is presented to the user. The GUI itself is just that - it passes everything to HandbrakeCLI which does the actual work.

Handbrake got a bad reputation years ago for being slow with updating its binaries. The open-source video world was progressing quite rapidly in the mid to late 2000's, and one or two updates a year didn't cut it especially when the outdated code had visual bugs in it.

Nowadays, x264 and friends are updated more slowly with (relatively) minor changes, and Handbrake itself now has public nightlies to play with. I personally still wouldn't use Handbrake, as I'm comfortable enough with ffmpeg from the commandline, but I can't think of anything wrong with Handbrake's current encoding pipeline.
