Intel wants to make its future "Haswell" chip better than past generations of silicon at gaming and announced tools to make this happen at the Game Developers Conference today.

The world's largest chipmaker announced tools, known as extensions, for software developers that allow Intel's 4th generation Intel Core, aka Haswell, to process demanding special effects.

The first of these extensions, called PixelSync, allows programmers to more realistically render smoke, hair, windows, foliage, fences, and other complex geometry and natural phenomena, according to Intel.

"The artists working on Grid2 have been requesting this type of effect for years, and prior to this, it wasn't possible to achieve it at a reasonable cost," Clive Moody, senior executive producer at Codemasters Racing, the game's developer, said in a statement.

Hmm, Intel trying APU-like approach? Gee, why they still keep making vendor-locked proprietary API's? First PhysX, then this. Games should look the same on any platform. Btw, what's this effect all about? All I see is smoke outside and inside the building.

just to make sure i am understanding this correctly, this doesn't require the use of the IGP right? its something separate that will work with discreet GPUs

Looks to me from what is in the article that they are referring to the IGP . but a decent discrete graphics solution should still perform much better .

I think Intel hired North Korea's graphics team for their marketing. Gimmick trash.

Would game developers actually make use of this? We have a hard enough time getting them to use multiple cores.

As Intel continues its march towards performance relevancy in the graphics space with Haswell, it should come as no surprise that we're hearing more GPU related announcements from the company. At this year's Game Developer Conference, Intel introduced two new DirectX extensions that will be supported on Haswell and its integrated GPU. The first extension is called PixelSync (yep, Intel branding appears alive and well even on the GPU side of the company - one of these days the HD moniker will be dropped and Core will get a brother). PixelSync is Intel's hardware/software solution to enable Order Independent Transparency (OIT) in games.

methinks it is just haswell's igpu. on a side note:

HandBrake to Get QuickSync Support
i really can't justify spending $350+ for a cpu and motherboard upgrade yet just for an igpu. but by the time broadwell comes out, that will be a different story if the cpu performance is worth it by then.
