ATI 5850 running really hot!

Hi there.

My gf got a computer with a ATI 5850 and its something that I've built myself, which dosent usually cause any problems. Theres a major one here though.

Even when shes in idle mode or just surfing, it runs over 80 degrees celcius. When she opens a game like The Sims it instantly turns the fan up to 100%, and I guess its because it tries to cool it down. What could the problem here be?

Its not OC´ed.
Its Windows 7.
Its not cable clutter since I've done cable management.
Her case is a NZXT Phantom.

Take the card out, and clean all the gunk out from 2 generations ago wink.gif

After a while, dust will start to accumulate and possible shut the card down because of thermal management - Take it apart and clean it out real well, if you can, re apply the thermal paste, I suspect it hasn't been re applied yet since its her PC, and not under regular maintenance etc, when I cleaned my X1600 Pro, I had lumps of stuff clogging the fan - It was never cleaned for 6 yrs lol. Every time I buy a card that has been used, I always re apply. You never know how many dust bunnies the previous owner had etc.

Thanks for your suggestions smile.gif

Sadly, its been done like 1½ month ago frown.gif I took everything apart and build it from scratch after she got the computer. That means cleaning every bit of dust out with a thin paint brush, reapplying thermal paste on the CPU etc.

Ive never tried to take a GPU completely apart, is that something thats easily done? And can I just use the paste I use for the CPU on the GPU?

The same paste will work, most are secured by push piuns and/or screws, take it apart as you would with a cpu cooler - Reapply the paste on the Chip[ itself AND the meory chips/vrms etc. It should drop some temps. While your in there, take some pics for refernce

She maybe infected with a silent bitcoin miner. Check the usages for the CPU and GPU when at idle.
