Updated bios but I had quiet a new one anyway. OROM? Not sure what you mean - I just used the latest .CAP update for it. hmmm ill have to look further - but maybe the F6 with the right version is the way? Doorules? thanks

RAID 10 4 hds - 2 ssds 1 os one other - windows 8 64 bit pro running off the board.

I will be getting a dedicated raid one day when I got the cash which might help all this out :S!

AH yes, interesting, more important little details...

dpl2007, Yes, you're not following the flow here.

The suggestion is for you to try the IRST RAID driver, rather than the RSTe driver you have now. Don't get confused by the tangent you went on checking the driver of the disk drive, that is not important. The driver for your SATA controller on the X79 chipset is the focus.

X79 was meant to use the RSTe driver, the only Intel PC chipset that uses that driver. Users found that the usual IRST driver performed better than RSTe, but IRST had to be installed manually. Sean provided a link for that procedure. For Windows 8, you should use IRST 11.6 or 11.7.

I posted earlier that is looks like your poor performing 840 Pro is on a SATA II port. The X79 chipset only has two SATA III ports, the others are SATA II. That would at least partially explain the 840's lesser performance. You should check where that second 840 is connected.

Ah ok I was actually looking at the driver for my SATA controller as well but wasn't sure about it. And no The two SSD's are in the intel SATA III slots though they are on different makes of cables - but both are supposed to be SATA III cables although I know people say there's no difference anyway. Also I crystal disk marked the drives when I first installed everything and they both were hitting around 500 MB/s anyway but that was before I changed the cables I think - although I think I checked the speed after and all was normal (not 100 percent on that).

So here is my controller just incase:

Ok so I will try 11.7.0.1013 with that method - still confused at why TRIM is supposedly not working - bit worried my OS disk is next :S - thanks...

4 constellations are on the sata II's intel. And the marvel has a blu ray.

You will test TRIM again after you install new driver.I dont know does 3.6 driver have panel(program that comes with it),but when you install 11.6 or 11.7 exe you will get panel that will tell you what Intel Raid orom do you have.
This is panel

Or you can see it while bios is booting hitting ctrl+i

If you have older then 11.0,then you will probably not have TRIM even if you install driver.
But i strong believe that you have 11.0.and something if you have new bios.

Whoa SATA O ROM in bios ctrl i situation is 3.5.0.1005 :S ! I did have that panel program earlier but it was old too - almost no information in it!

Another interesting development:

optimization was not available for the SSD drives at all earlier (now its on for G:) and also iaStorA is now showing up but all the same or even worse speeds are showing up I guess this might be because I re installed that drive and also rolled back and updated the RAID controller.

Anyhow I guess this all means I still go ahead with the manual 11.7.0.1013 install via have disk. So thats the top option here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=22194 11.7.0.1013 x64 version then update driver software for intel c600/C220... have disk then I have two options:

And pick the top one - desktop/workstation ? Sorry to be so careful but its a bit scary! Thanks!

You will have to ask doorules for driver installation process. But i know for sure that he have 11.6 Intel Raid OROM.
Remember i dont say any of this will fix your SSD performance, but this is only way you can go.You need to enabled TRIM for your SSDs and like you said you dont have it now according to Trim check tool.
First you need to install that driver, after that if you still dont have TRIM,you will need to flash your bios with 11.6.orom.The procedure is so simple,i do it all the time, you only need to read how to do it.
http://www.win-lite.de/wbb/board208-specials/board281-bios-bios-modding/17000-ahci-raid-rom-modules-for-bios-modding-already-extracted/?s=e83a2607e5e128af6ae9527e8d144a27f39b343e
You can do that while you waiting doorules reply ,so you have it ready.
After you install new driver, first check if trim works,if it works wait about 1 hour so TRIM recover SSD performance then make benchmark.
About Windows optimization, they talk something about it,i cant remember know where, that in some case it do defragmentation of SSD and not optimization.
And defragmentation can worsen SSD performance. You dont need that because TRIM and Garbage Collection is more then enough to keep SSD in top performance.
I would love to somebody reply on this mater, because i use Win 7 and i dont have Win optimization.

Windows 8 optimization for SSDs manually TRIM them.
Quote:

What's scary? you are just telling windows to use a new driver manually rather than through a installer package...

And you choose the top one...your chips set is not a mobile laptop...

And run Windows experience index and you may be able to get windows to set up optimization correctly.

BTW when you tested for TRIM you had the program at the root of your SSD and ran it twice to complete correct?

Also, since it is scary for you i suggest you make a full system image of your OS before continuing so if something happens you can simply restore the image.

I find that guy which SSD Windows 8 want to defragment instead of optimized.
