Looking for good city-building games

Thread Starter
Hello there,

I am looking for some good city-building games. They don't have to be multiplayer. I have seen some Sim City 4 gameplay and I really liked it. What is the best game to play. I am looking for some very intuitive gameplay, but nothing too complicated.

Thanks in advance,

A.T.

I would avoid SimCity (5) like the plague for now. I preordered it and it has just been one disappointment after another. SimCity 4 was a lot better and had much more customization options.
Cities XL isn't to bad. It looks great but it was horribly optimized. Even on a very high end computer the game will chug like molasses long before you can fill the map. Sadly the current City Simulation games are pretty weak :/

Anno 2070 is good.

Sim City 4 is an older game, but still a good solution if you want Sim City without worrying about online capabilities. It is not well optimized however. PC Gaming Wiki have a few fixes for you to try out especially if you want things like widescreen resolution support, for instance. But even then it doesn't work smoothly, so be ready to save frequently in case of any crashes. For what it's worth, I bought Sim City 4 over Christmas and due to the bugs, poor optimization etc have put about 2 hours into it only.

Another option that I and another forum member have been having a lot of fun with is Tropico 4. While it doesn't have multiplayer support of any type, and is a bit different from Sim City, it still is a lovely city builder in my opinion. One which focuses on relationships and standings of your dictator avatar as much as the city building itself. If Tropico 4 is too expensive, check out Tropico 3, it is very much the same game, certain buildings and customisation options are missing, but it should be fully functional.

I believe however that Tropico 3 might be less optimized than Tropico 4, so that might affect your purchasing decision.

Well it does give you an idea of how the game plays and what you can expect from it. Best advice would be to pick it up and give it a spin as I'm not 100% sure what is locked out of the demo. It has been a while since I played it.

I don't know about the demo, but Tropico 4 has filled the City Building Game slot in my list. It is a very fun game, it is different from Sim City 4 in ways, but I think the game achieves success in being entertaining while micro-managing your island.

In Sim City, you are a mayor.
In Tropico, you are a dictator. biggrin.gif

One sounds like more fun, and (IMO) it is.

I've never tried a Tropico game, but that seems pretty entertaining. I may get it and play that until SimCity is fixed... if ever.
