Mini Fridge mod.. - Page 2

I actually just picked up a mini fridge for $10 to mess with.
I know the fridge obviously will not be able to handle the load of the entire PC's heat fully enclosed, so I am trying to consider ideas on how to mod it.

Being that it was only $10, I don't mind drilling into it.
One idea I had was to drill a hole near the top side of the fridge (where the coldest air is dispensed on this particular model) and install a 120mm 140cfm intake to bring in fresh air, with my water cooler's radiator mounted on the inside (attached to the intake fan).

I was then going to gut the shelving inside it and mount the motherboard inside the fridge. On the other side of fridge I was going to drill 2 holes. 1 of them would be for running wires to the PC (and then seal it) and a 2nd hole with another fan for exhaust.

Since the fridge itself won't be able to run 24/ to cool the PC (and wouldn't be able to either way), I was thinking the airflow would help remove a lot of the burden on the fridge. And when the fridge does kick in, the cold air blown in will hit the radiator first and then cycle outside of the fridge, to offer occasional cooler air to the system. With air constantly being cycled, I doubt the air would ever get cool enough to cause condensation on the motherboard.

Would something like this possibly work?

I had considered trying to mount only the radiator inside the fridge (and still using intake/exhaust fans), but I had a closed loop system (Thermaltake Water 2.0 Extreme) and wouldn't be able to run it that far without some heavy modification.

1 mini fridge won't do you much good. if you could use 20 minifridges though.... XD Might as well just go phase change at that point though.

20 mini fridges might be possible with enough bargain hunting haha. Take them all apart and make a walk-in freezer. Might have to wear tons of thermal gear to prevent frostbite, but those would be some great PC temps lol. Just make sure to plug in that monstrosity to your neighbors power line. Would also need to rent a truck and forklift just to move the pc

What you COULD do is this, use the fridge as the cooling unit for water, run hoses into the fridge through the rubber seals on the door. You will want a big res of water that way the war/hot water flowing back into the fridge does not offset the internal temp of the fridge too much.

The problem is that you can't get more than 50w or so (I'm just going by the figure posted earlier--I have no clue how much heat a fridge dissipates) of dissipation no how convoluted you make the system. Unless you plan to do something crazy with other TEC or active cooling/ more fridges, there is no good way to augment heat dissipation in a desktop system with a single fridge.

Well the water flowing out of the fridge should be quite cold, how long that temp will last is the question.

Modify the inside of a mini fridge and build the computer inside utilizing the exhisting interior so I can still keep my beers cold.

Now a perplexing question...

How would I defeat the condensation issue, using 2 120 mm fans be enough to keep the airflow going????

Also should i silicone the backplate before i sorround it with expanding foam??

Right now this is in the idea phase and im trying to piece it together in my mind right now.

Any help would be appreciated.

just an fyi. your fridge will die at the very least keep an eye on it. once it does die that fridge becomes an oven ( insulated with nothing but head going into it. ) ill get in to why in a minute. it may last a few months may not.

fridges are designed to get to a temp and stay there, however not made to cycle the comp on and off constantly. when you put food into a fridge it gets cold and stays there there for the fridge just has to maintain temps. not overcome a heat load.

putting a heat source inside the fridge will cause the compressor to run 10x+ as much. as instead of maintaining temps it is trying to overcome the thermal load ( if this makes sense. )

there are compressors made to do this. however the ones in fridges are not.

^^^^ this.......the bottom line of this is that given the small almost negligible amount of cooling this mini fridge would provide and the fact that it would soon burn out......even with the several different ideas that are aimed at improving the situation, the truth is this is a non starter that would not be worth your time effort and money....it may even cost you dearly in terms of damaged hardware.

You'd be far better off looking at other methods such as bong cooling.

If you really want to go down the route of actively cooled systems then there are commercially made phase change units or you can go down the route of building a chill box as I have done......but you have to invest in something man enough to do the cooling.....I've used a 12000BTU air con unit....that' s probably a bit of over kill and I believe the consensus is 9000 - 10000 btu's is sufficent.

Here's a link to my chill box build, it's a bit ghetto in terms of looks but the build principles are sound, the first pictures are of a prototype made out of polystyrene, the finished chamber pictured later is made of acrylic sheet and insulation board.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1264939/helium-results-window-air-con-chill-box-build

There are many way to skin a cat so I'm not saying this is the only way...but the principles are sound.

I decided to just keep my mini fridge stock. I would rather keep more beers cold than rip it apart lol
