I hooked my TV up to the PC while it was on tought it was off so sparks came flying out of the video card and i got zapped

So i turn the PC off let it stay off for a few hours then i turn it on and everything seem just fine other then the PC was more unstable then mexico city during a earthquake a few days later the PC refuses to power on light on the motherboard is on but it wont start

So i send the PC to a repair shop and then i was told the motherboard was fried and it was a Asus Rampage III Extreme motherboard which was not cheap so after a week without a PC i get the brand new Asus Rampage III Black Edition for free as the R3E was EOL great better motherboard for free

So i get the PC home and then i found my Radoen HD 5970 video card was dead too great another week later i get a new one

About a year later i upgrade and then i find out the PSU was damaged as well so out to buy a new PSU

3 Years later to this day (funny enough) i have a very high respect fo HDMI cables damm things are dangerous as hell

There has been an update with this over the weekend and I managed to get my rig into work and test it out there.

It turns out that the PSU was running fine and it was the plug sockets at home that were causing it not to spin -.-'.

As this was not the problem we ran a few more tests at work, which are as follows:

- Tested the whole rig at work - Didn't boot.
- Tested the rig without the graphics card - Booted fine.
- Tested the rig with a new PSU and without the graphics card - Booted fine.
- Tested the rig with the new PSU and with the graphics card - Didn't boot.

The only thing I didn't get to test was a different GPU because we didn't have any PCI-E 3.0 cards lying around.

So this basically leaves me with the GPU card is faulty or the pci-e port on the mobo isn't working. Which of these is the most likely for a non booting system?

Thanks for any help smile.gif

No it's not. Unless you're plugging one of these in:

You'll be fine.

Dude, you have a building wiring fault, or a faulty device. Either you shifted your graphics card in the slot, shorting the pins, or your TV wasn't grounded properly and there was a back feed of some sort.

This doesn't just happen without there being some outside source. Check your outlets for gods sake before you get yourself killed. An HDMI cable does not carry enough current or voltage to cause what you described unless there was a faulty chassis ground on the TV or graphics card.

It's possible that the ground plane may have been compromised on the graphics card and that's where the short occurred, or that the HDMI connector was in contact with a component and when grounded it flowed power...

Either way, plugging in and unplugging an HDMI cable will not simply cause that issue by itself. You can plug and unplug stuff all day from your PC without blowing it up... As long as the cards are properly retained.

Faulty GPU is more likely. I have seen instances where improperly retained cards shifting the system will move the PCI card in the slot causing it to short out. Try using it in a different PCI-e slot if at all possible.

sounds like video card. time to get a new video card, assuming your psu makes enough juice to run your pc. for power for a system that demanding id start with 550 watts or higher for a power supply. the video card might be RMA'able.

Okay, well I have got someone testing the card for me tomorrow smile.gif Will see what happens when he has put it in his rig.

I hope it is still RMA'able, the whole rig is less than 2 months old smile.gif Will have to check later.

Cheers

HDMI Cables are not dangerous unless you put a mains plug on the end. Stop perpetuating a needless fear.

No. You said HDMI cables are "dangerous as hell". I was responding to that statement alone.
