Back to linux need advise for a slow system optimal setup.

Ok 1st, i wonder what Distro you guys use.

I came across linux mint 14 now with cinnamon desktop so far.

It is basically like ubuntu but without unity and the shop stuff.

If anybody can advise any other Distro or has knowledge about linux mint debian it would be helpfull.

What bothers me about cinnamon is it´s not compatible to compiz i want a system that runs compiz. I like the cube and the hovering windows.

Ok here is the system i got atm p4 3ghz ht 1gb ram gts 240 nvidia card.

2nd thing that bothers me is vdpau i guess i managed to setup flash to play hd movies but it crashes often .

I can do vdpauinfo, vainfo and get the correct output but media playes like flash crash or vlc are slow as hell and mplayer produces bad results.

I want the system to be Multimedia i got a Tv card also with saa7134 chip i know the kernel modules work i need a tv app sugessted that can handle the card well it needs to know internal audio stream from the saa7134-alsa driver.

So basically i need sugestions for a tv app and setup for vdpau.

3rd , i want a custom kernel i followed the guide from this site and build two kernels so far, it has to be preemtive desktop, wich timer should i chosse 300hz or 1000hz ?

So far the build only worked with ubuntu sources when i use source from kernel.org it breaks nvidia modules from the prebuild packages from mint, a fix could be deinstall al prebuild and use the shell scrip from nvidia but then all following updates would fail.

Hope i get some help here.

Ah and last but not least make the system viable for wine, windows gameing.

Is it even wise use a 64bit os i tried compile kernel with the new x32abi but have no results yet trying wine.

Faveorite games that should run in wine are PoE WoW and D3.

Windows i atm only have a XP install so i try to figure out to make a all in one linux system.

Atm. i dualboot but i would be glad to ave most of my time on linux somehow.

Ah and the very last thing is ac97 driver in linux it´s snd-intel8x0 for me and it ****s up it plays center in the left rear and subwoofer in right rear and the rear channels on center/lfe is there a way to redirect audio jacks, in software i dont want to replug em everytime i reboot.

Just really quick...your P4 might be the big problem for you with anything HD related as I don't know how much that GT240 actually handles rendering and what codecs it completely renders alone. Flash is a piece of junk with it's loads on hardware. You're best looking at XBMC and trying to get their community to help with the TV aspect you're talking about. If you're looking for a pure media center then just use their XBMCbuntu. If you want flashy desktop effects then you'll need to accept the potential for lower performance and look to either another DE such as KDE, Gnome, or cobble one together yourself (others on here can suggest how).

This is just a really quick response to give you possible direction.
