this is illegal because it destroys the idea of competition, neither side will ever lower their price because they know the other side won't lower it either.
if one side lowered it the other side would have to follow suit and bring theirs down to compete with it
it was really smart of them to do that because gpu lifecycles are relatively short so with normal competition the top of the line models would be like 200 right before the next gen comes out
think about it this way, remember how ps2, xbox, and gc all used to be like 300-500, now they are all 100 because its the end of their life cycle... its the same with graphics cards except instead of a 5 year lifespan its only a 2 year lifespan
they had to collaborate to fix the prices in order to maximize their profit in the short 2 year lifespan
