Trying to decide what to do. Build bigger, smaller or same size.

Thread Starter
I have a Define Mini with a mATX board with a i5 760 and a GTX570 classified.

I am thinking of upgrading the board and, well, the whole system.

Purpose of the comp: General use and gaming (660 Ti should work well)

I have a few thoughts on my mind.

Is there a need for so many slots on an ATX board or even a mATX Board?
What do you guys use your extra slots for if you are not populating them with GPUs?

Haswell 4750k will be much better than my 760 but probably not much better than a 3750k.
So the question is how long to wait?
Wait to see what we get from haswell and pick up an early board?

The only thing stearing me away from an Mini-iTX build is lack of sata ports and fan pins. 4 sata ports and 2 fan pins is not a lot...

It all comes down to personal preference and what you need it for.
I prefer ATX or bigger motherboards, as they have several SATA's, more PCIE slots and often easier to find really good and/or cheaper motherboards.
Also when you are going for bigger, which usually means you are buying a bigger case, it means more room for better cooling, and perhaps even watercooling.

Haswell will be roughly 10% better than the other, so not that much of an improvement really, the 3570k/3770k are already beasts! Upgrading from a 760, a 3570k should be a decent upgrade, as it has a lot better per core performance.

For the extra slots, you can populate them with a lot of stuff!
Personally I use a sound card (really worth getting an dedicated soundcard, always miles better than onboard).
But you can put in for example a RAID card, network card, dedicated physx and whatever else you can find that fits in a PCI/PCI-E slot.

Mike, hi friend. You sound like your wanting to get a bigger case, but can't find a reason why. I think the most important thing to do is to buy what you are comfortable with and base it off your needs first, then add in what you like. I use my atx mid tower case for a graphics card and a sound card as well as a wireless card, I could easily do with a mini itx, but I wanted a mid tower.

It all comes down to preference man, you don't need to impress anyone. I have a $2100 rig inside an Antec Three Hundred two, because I like the case & I don't like the look of all the gamer cases. Decide based solely on what you want / need. No one can tell you otherwise.

CurtTerror, I as well don't like uber gaming cases. A little flash is alright though.

I am seriously considering a Fractal Designs R4 with the window. I think it is a great case but I dont want to put a mATX board in and have all that extra space.

After checking on some stuff I may wait till haswell to see the new asus boards. I love asus products, just dont dig the sabertooths look, the maximus v look (gene is great looking but.mATX) and the pro is sweet except I dont like the light blue slot that wont be populated :/... I like the Msi Mpower z77 but I wanna go asus smile.gif

Being picky since I want it windowed.

So probably going Atx and will have expansion capability. And no sound card, going to run a two channel external DAC with nearfield monitors.

A little flash is fine. As long as it's not costing $290 for the mother board to fit in with the colour scheme ( Just my opinion, I know to many people it matters a lot )

Fractal Define R4 is an excellent case. It's solid dude!

If you want an MATX board, there would be wasted space in a bigger case such as the r4 ( although the case isn't huge, it's rather roomy ).

I originally was going to go MATX, then ITX, but decided on atx based on the fact, I Wanted to SLI & then add a sound card & wireless card in and I'm happy with my decision. I think ATX isn't too big, and you've got a better range of options for your build. I myself, am going to be looking at the new Haswell offerings too, however I lean towards Gigabyte usually but I'll have a look at them all this time.

Good luck with your decisions man.

As the guys have said, it's down to your needs and your personal preference smile.gif

I went from a HAF 932 to a TJ-08e and couldn't be happier, having said that I loved the HAF while I had it...

I believe so that its really personal preference, i myself never went with the so much bigger case, than entry mid-tower full atx size case can offer which save space, compact and really quite entertaining to figure it out, how to fit all these component in such a mid tower case, an imaginary visual of cable routing would really help.
