Trying to build a new gaming rig

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm currently planning to build a new amd rig as an upgrade from my pentium 4.
Firstly, is intel really more powerful than amd in terms of power? is is actually worth it to get an intel processor over amd?
Secondly, I'm planning to get a fx 6300, is it worth it to go for the fx 8350?
Thirdly, i'm wondering if the amd fx processors are actually having 6 or 8 physical cores or 3 cores with amd's version of hyperthreading (like some people say) ?
Forthly, Is it worth it to overclock the fx 6300? any great performance increase or does it just turn it into a microwave?

Here is my setup that I have decided on, any suggestions are greatly appreciated (Try to keep budget as low as possible, I'm a 15 year old student)

Note: prices are in Singapore dollars

Processor+MotherBoard: ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS+AMD FX-6300 - $263

Graphics Card: ATI 7770hd GHz- $100 (getting it from a friend)

Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 - $69

PSU: ThermalTake Tough Gold 550 watts - $125

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz (2x4gb) - $80

DVD Drive: Random one from asus - $30

HDD: WD 1 TB BLACK 7200rpm - $132

Total:S$799

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

Oh my god you asked it .... we're doomed !!

Seriously i'm not going down (again) with the debate of intel over amd and vice-versa, just know that amd doesn't do hyperthreading and that the number of core anounced is the number of cores.

Now your choice of memory and hard disc is correct. I don't know that case you picked so i'm not talking about it either.

About your PSU capacity is good but ... Gold ? realy ? I mean you know that your paying nearly twice the price just for the little shinny thing on it ? I can't stress enough that the energy saving is not worth the price. Currently one of the best 500W PSU is the silencer mark III. It's got great quality materials and is semi-modular and cheap :

I would change the cpu to Phenom II x4 965/955 wchich cost less than 100$. In gaming Phenom II is still more than enough to play modern games with good FPS. Then get motherboard like 990xa-ud3 wchich should give you nice overclock on this phenom) and also you will be always ready for "heavy" cpu's (125+W tdp)

well, apparently the shop I'm gonna go to does not have the psu you mentioned and I'm not gonna go order one online, so Is changing it to a CoolerMaster GX550w 80 psu fine? it costs $98 SGD

and also, I think I would wanna change the processor to a fx 8320, cuz, for some weird reason, the shop I'm going to sells the 8320 at 2 dollars more than the 6300. Than the 8350 would be close to a 100 dollars more, is the performance difference that huge? is it worth it to jump to the 8350 instead of 8320?

oh, and also, I would not wanna go get a phenom, mainly due to the fact that it uses a am3 socket instead of am3+ and I would like to have an upgrade option when SteamRoller "rolls" by (no pun intended biggrin.gif)

Is Intel really more powerful than AMD - yes and no, with a strong emphasis on "what games do you play"

1) For most games what CPU you have won't matter, because CPU power just isn't that big of a deal for them. If your favorite games are one of those few that are heavily reliant on per-core performance (SC2, both wings of liberty & heart of the swarm is the classic example), then yes, the better per-core performance of Intel processors will be significant. Or to be more accurate - more cost-efficient. Other than those select games you can generally figure that an overclocked fx-6300 roughly equals a stock i5. About the same total system cost, not coincidentally.

2) For gaming, no. The fx-6300 will perform basically the same as an fx-83xx, assuming you overclock. (The extra cores don't matter.)

3) The fx-6300 has six real cores set up in three pairs. Each pair of cores shares some, but not all, internal resources like cache, etc.

4) You absolutely should overclock an fx-6300 otherwise it's just kind of a crappy processor in comparison with a locked i5.

Can't give you pricing suggestions without a link to your retailer/their online price list.

first. intel is more powerful than AMD. but not in all applications though. a 8350 is a very good CPU. it's just game developers haven't utilized its power yet. 3570 is the winning horse when it comes to gaming and 8350 is the winner when it comes to Streaming.

I would suggest going with the 8320 Why? it's a little bit better than the FX6300 and Pick up a powerful board mate. AMD is sticking to same pin layout on their next gen so you will not need a new Mobo if you to upgrade the CPU.

PSU: stay away from that cooler master mode. and beware that AMD are power hungry products. they will consume more than intel in power . I would say get a nice 550W PSU and call it a day. choose any one from this List

Have fun.

Oh well, I find the cooler master psu's cheaper and budget is a large issue here.. so I would probably be picking up a fix 8320, its just 2 dollars more than the 6300.

Here's their price list, can you guys give me better suggestions from this?

To be honest, if possible you want to aim for a locked i5/overclocked fx-6300 as the best CPU price point. Also, the fx-8320 is more than just $2 over the fx-6300 according to that price list. Here's what I'd recommend at that shop:

CPU/Mobo ($342) - i5-3450/Gigabyte B75m-d3v
locked, so it only runs at stock - but about the same gaming/casual computing performance as an overclocked fx-6300. But no need to buy an overpriced cooler for overclocking from that store.

GPU ($100) - 7770

Case ($49) - Fractal Design Core 1000. Decent mATX case, cheap. mATX-mobos only.

PSU ($89) - Seasonic S12II 520. Why? Seasonic is by far the best brand in terms of quality & reliability they have there, and it doesn't break the bank.

RAM ($88) - Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb kit - the Low Profile version is preferable.

HDD ($88) - Seagate 1TB 64mb (cache). Performs at least as well as WD black, you don't pay through the nose for a longer warranty. Easiest $50 to save in the build.

DVD ($25) - Might as well go for LG & save $5. Unless the (maybe a litlte) possibly quieter Asus model matters to you.

Total: 781. With a higher-quality power supply, better CPU, at about the same price.

Is Intel really that far ahead? Why does everyone reccomand Intel over amd? And the price list clearly shows that the 8320 is $1-$2 more than the 6300.

Sooo... that aside... if Intel does not exist, what amd CPU and mobo configuration would you reccomand ?

EDIT: What games do I play? Mainly Minecraft, battlefield 3, some other fps games... I also do quite alot of video editing and rendering.

And is the XFX HD 7770 GHz Super Overclock black edition powerful enough for these tasks?
