The dungeons consisted of pieces, that would be randomly put together like a puzzle, but I'd never actually consider it "random". All of the outdoor areas and boss battles were the same layout.

I'm also in agreement, I'd never consider D2's layouts to be random however, they did add some spice to the game.
I don't think the AH destroyed the game either because it mainstreamed a feature the vast majority of D2 used anyway which was/is buying their items online.
Did it take some of the fun away? Yes but...In the same token you can't fault them for trying to corner that market; a market that the vast majority of us were using. I used to see newbies with pre 2.0 VG's all the time...GF's...Ahm's...I mean, come on.
Most people are also using the AH as an excuse to quite -- Easy solution, don't use it...Use the chat like everyone else does /problem solved.
