I thought the lack of a skill tree and being privy to all abilities killed most of the fun

That really depends on who you ask. Skill trees are nice for people who genuinely want to customize THEIR character. Unfortunately, a ton of people would rather google the most effective PvE or PvP builds, basically what we call "cookie cutter" builds. The new system however is horrible. It completely takes away any incentive for one to make a new character of the same class. Back then I would have multiple characters of the same class for different builds. In D3, I made a Wizard and that was really as far as I got. I couldn't stand playing another character because the game was so bad to me. Paragon leveling made things even worse for me in terms of playing a different class because I have to invest all that time in a game I no longer enjoyed playing even a tiny bit. The worst part of D3 is I was scared to buy anything or level up a different class because I never knew when that nerf hammer would descend. Being a Wizard, I was scarred deeply by the nerf hammer. In D2, if I didn't like the changes, I would just forgo the update. With D3's always online requirement, I can't do that.

path of exile is more similar to d2 in that way. i still like d3s combat the most though. path of exile is so much slower paced, which makes it easier imo

In other news...

Path of Exile is buffing melee users soon biggrin.gif. That game is so addicting.

Diablo II is still addicting to play... DIII was such a boring disappointment for how long the wait was. I, too, also started up DII and starting "walking" the game. It's so much more fun to have to stop and think about what stats to add and what skills to pick, tailoring your gear to your strengths rather than just buying one good weapon from the shop and owning everything because the skills are based on gear. GAH! sozo.gif

Exactly...

I miss the lvl 30 pally i tweaked for fun and turned out to be explicitly deadly to cookie cutter trap assassins.
Anything under lvl 70ish I would kill outright, anything under 90 would run to town and login to another character and kill me to make them feel better.

That's the kind of personalization and personal satisfaction that's missing from D3. And it's such a shame too.

However, after the last D2 patch , though i welcome the utility changes with welcome arms, it is near impossible without a network of friends or 3rd party sites and hacks to gear up and lvl every single build you would like to try. Also, the step from wide eyed noob, to leet runners and builders was very quick for many, impossible for many more.
D3 tried to cater for both and did not succeed. I stopped play at lvl 57, until then i was looking forward to inferno being brutally hard and near impossible.

The D3 cow lvl is pretty visually satisfying, though, it could really could use more and more more varied mobs in large screen filling packs of fluffy pink death.

Aside from the fact I thought the visuals for D3 weren't dark/ominous enough... the loot system really pissed me off, you were pretty much forced into spending (real) money in the AH... or farm every minute of every day for three months straight to get the money up to get anywhere. Don't get me wrong I do like the AH in that it takes out the black market, and makes available for one to trade/sell items with other players easily instead of selling them to merchants..(as said by someone else) the fact they setup the drop system around it is where they failed.
