Overclocking mobile AMD A series Trinity?

The time has come to move on from my little Liano laptop. It has served me well. Going from 1.4ghz stock to 2.8ghz across all 4 cores while undervolting has made me very happy with it. But I want a laptop with a nice video card. As always, I go for the biggest and badest AMD has to offer. Right now that is the MSI GX60. Trinity............ I have heard the horror stories. I7 walks all over it. I5 walks all over it. Entry level I3 can hang neck and neck with it. Verdict = Bottleneck.

That was easy enough to over come with Liano. K10 stat worked wonders. I have been running my A6 at 2.8ghz since june of 2011. No problems and max temp I ever reached was 80c and that was after ours and hours of playing red faction last summer upstairs in my very hot room with no laptop cooler. I had high hopes for Trinity based on how Liano put out but I guess that is just a dream?

Has anyone found anyway to overclock these? K10 stat does not work as we are on bulldozer cores now frown.gif

If anyone has a method to overclock Trinity A10-4600m Please let me know. I want to try to kill as much bottlenek as possible. I will be ordering from Xotic PC so I will be getting IC diamond compound and copper cooling upgrade along with a new high air flow cooler. Xotic offers overclocking services but I called to confirm, They will only OC the Radeon 7970. They will not touch the APU. I need to find a way to touch it myself and touch it a lot! I would expect it can run 3ghz with the modifications I am getting but what to use to perform the actual over clock?

There's no way to OC Trinity other than though BCLK. However, you can lock the clock rate at 2.7 GHz and undervolt with PSCheck.

I would suggest waiting for the A10-5750m. It has a 2.5 GHz base and 3.5 GHz max (with half of the cores disabled). I suspect the max clock rate for all cores active will be between 2.9 to 3.0 GHz.

Hopefully PSCheck is compatible with Richland.

Is it going to be a drop in upgrade for the current socket or is it a new platform?

Richland uses the same socket as Trinity, but you should check if the laptop's BIOS would allow it. I've read a few horror stories where people try to upgrade from an i3/i5 to an i7, only to discover that the BIOS wouldn't recognize the CPU.

I would assume MSI's AMD flag ship laptop would have a bios update sooner or later. I will have to look into it tho

Actually it does have compatibility: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=34764945

No idea how the user got his hands on an A10 5750m...

WOOT! I am going to order it for sure. It is not a massive upgrade in my opinion and I could care less about the Win 8 software buffs as I run Ubuntu and Windows 7 but none the less, It may help remove some of the bottlenek on the Radeon HD7970m. Poor thing is starving for some love.rolleyes.gif

GX70, essentially an updated GX60 with a 8970m and an A10-5750m.

Oh wow... I wonder what full specs will be. I hope it has a 17 inch screen and back light keyboard this time around. I am guessing It will be the holidays before this 1 makes its way to the USA.
