AM2 or Socket F?

Thread Starter
Should I get an AM2 board or wait and get a Socket F board?
I believe Socket F is for servers, kinda like Socket 940 compared to Socket 939.

AM2.
I'm not sure what Socket F is meant to be, but I thought it was a server implementation, but I could be wrong.

The new 65nm processors are AM2, though, so keep that in mind. Not positive what 4x4 is going to be on, but I think it's on AM3, which can support AM2 processors...

There's just a lot of new technology being developed right now, so in the next year or so a lot of things will be different, so in all honesty, I would say AM2, as it is somewhat proven, and will not be "obsolete" for some time, though it will be "outdated" in the next few months.

Socket F from what i can see is for Server use Mostly ..I would avoid it if possible.Especially if you are into gaming AS it will use EEC ram which will hurt performance.
Yeah, you want to stay away from ECC RAM if possible. Go for the AM2 board/processor.

As far I know, 4x4 will be based on socket F (1207), BUT with the use or 'normal' non-ECC RAM.

Otherwise, socket F is the server stuff, in which case... forget overclocking.

well whatever socket the 4x4 is on. i thought that was going to be socket F
post #10 of 17
Yes, socket F. But that's pretty much a dead end. 4x4 is the only thing that will be on socket F with 'normal' RAM support. The future will be AM2+ and AM3.

If you want to be future ready, get AM2, since likely the future CPUs will run in that.
