You've a point with the 8970M, but not with the 680MX as the iMac it's in either has a 3.2GHz i5 3470 or 3.4GHz i7 3770.

In mechanics stuff like this happens all the time, it's best to prepare for worst case and use that as the definite model than to use a lower standard. This keeps those worst case scenarios at bay, users who may get a chip that might be in spec voltage wise but a bit hotter than normal. It isn't an exact science per chip, as many people on here can chime in about how the same stepping can have extreme variances. It's just how things work. TDP gives you heat dissipation, which can translate into a rough estimate of watts used. I don't remember the forumla, anyways it's not that important.
Mmm, I see.

That's not true, it's subjective.

Nevertheless I misunderstood the post I replied to, thinking that he was inferring that the iMac's processor was weak, when in fact it appears he was saying it's a bad pairing because it's in an iMac.

a 680m performance while being able to overclock for around 1200 bucks? sounds like a pretty awesome idea when the cpu is holding its own at the same time. thumb.gif

Why isn't anyone else bringing up price? Sure, this doesn't prove AMD has the best mobile GPU, but maybe they don't want to. How much will a laptop with a 8970M cost? Might be worth it, imo.
