Lol no. It is that I am too used to 2 channel hifi speakers that I forgot that optical can't pass 7.1. My bad.

I see. HDMI is pretty stupid though. It's not just a simple interface. You can't just use it to connect to a receiver for audio-only use. There are people who decide what resolutions are supported over it. Meanwhile TOSLINK can do 125 Mbps, but "they" legally won't allow anyone to develop with it or coaxial to do more than 2-channel 24/192 or your lossy surround codecs.

Never heard a difference between onboard optical and video card hdmi personally.

Using a set a Revel Ultima Studio 2 speakers with a Yamaha RX-Z11 receiver.

Thread Starter
My whole problem with the HDMI route is the 7.1 spreads the sound so wide, i lose a lot of intensity. The bass gets distant, I DO NOT have adjustment for db for individual channels other than the two front speakers. I was really dissapointed with that fact.

I was also having an issue where windows was dropping sound from the stereo and trying to out put to the tv itself, since it sees both when you pass it through the receiver. i would have to go into the Nvidia control panel, and disable the hdmi, then re enable it.

That was getting old quick. I would honestly love to be able to demonstrate the sound difference properly, but recording a video does it no justice at all. if i use the HDMI and enable 5.1, or 7.1, I only get PCM 48khz displayed on the receiver display. Gives windows full control of the receiver, but windows sound enhancements and controls suck.

It sounds like your receiver or player is re-mapping the channels to try to spread the sides of 5.1 tracks into the rears of the 7.1 setup instead of just not using the rear speakers. Bass should not be affected because there is a dedicated LFE channel. Don't use any sound enhancements in Windows and disable any DSP crap on the receiver. PCM is what is being sent to the receiver over HDMI.
