Don't want to use 2500k. As I said, I just want the Xeon because I've never used them before

Going with a Xenon isn't exactly going small, it's going to give him the same performance practically as an overclocked 3570k or 2500k in most areas (with the 3570k or 2500k pulling ahead in almost all gaming scenarios). Only difference is he won't really be doing any overclocking and in multithreaded applications/situations the Xenon will outperform the comparable i5 because it's basically a locked i7; so the hyperthreading and extra threads will have the advantage over the i5. In gaming though, no contest, and of course in single threaded performance an overclocked CPU will obviously be at an advantage. Most you can do on the FSB end of the Xeon is like 3.7-4.1 if you're lucky.

If he didn't do any overclocking at all, ever, then I would understand the switch. However, the switch just doesn't seem logical in any sense considering what you already own. Sounds like a waste of money altogether. Your rig really isn't that "big" to begin with. It's a mid-ranged rig and going from an unlocked i5 to a Xeon isn't really a downgrade either.

Sell the 560 Ti, get that Sapphire 7870 XT, and throw on the Samsung SSD; after that your rig will be fine...

This move makes no sense.

Going small in size. I'm pretty sure the gaming performance won't be affected that greatly.

If I can sell my rig with the desired price, I will be making $~50 doing this smile.gif

I totally understand the desire to try the smaller form factor, especially if its going to be used as an HTPC as well as gaming. But why not stick with an i5 with mild overclocking? I'm sure it would do fine with a decent half-height cooler in a smaller case (especially with a few case fans).

I think the point is OP wants to try out Xeon processors. Maybe they want to learn what those processors have to offer;)

I don't see the problem with going to a Xeon E3-1230v2. It's basically a slightly down-clocked i7-3770 (non-K) without an IGP, but at a significantly lower price.

Since OP is adding a Tahiti LE card to the system, the lack of an IGP is only a "bad thing" in regards to a lack of redundancy were the discrete GPU to fail.
