Anyone here go from the Logitech Illuminated to Mechanical?

Thread Starter

Currently have this keyboard: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Illuminated-Ultrathin-Keyboard-Backlighting/dp/B001F51G16

I like it, but I've been eyeing mechanical for a bit since they've overall come down in price. I have the chance to trade the Logitech for a $90~ mechanical, so I'm looking for anyone who has maybe transitioned from this Logitech.

Razer or steelseries, in my opinion.

I have the razer blackwidow 2012 blue edition and i love it. I wish I had the silent ninja version...
^^^^ I totally approve.

However, if you decide on steelseries, I would suggest waiting for the K95 to come out. It's the dream child of the K90. It's dreamy.

sign up for an email alert for when it will be released here:
http://www.corsair.com/us/k95/

If you don't wanna wait, go for the razer or ducky shine II keyboards

I'm stupid, mixed up Corsair with steelseries. Still suggest you check it out tho.

A rubber dome keyboard is a rubber dome keyboard.

I had a Steelseries Merc Stealth, which was rubber domed like your Logitech, and bought a 2013 Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth. Comes with Cherry MX Browns.

If you're thinking that your keyboard is better than a mechanical, you're mistaken.

Uhm, no. The key mechanism has little to do with what I'm asking. The keys are rubberized, it has a built in hand rest, white back lights, and other features. It is a very nice keyboard to use. It's why I'm asking if anyone has left it or not. You don't have to get so defensive... And mechanicals are not godlike keyboards. This keyboard types fine, is silent, and soft. There is a reason why I am asking a specific question here.

As traphix said. A rubber domed keyboard is a rubber domed keyboard.

I took the plunge and got myself a ducky mechanical keyboard about 2 years ago. At the time it was a noticeable improvement, probably not a magical as people lead me to believe, but a noticeable improvement. The biggest difference I now find is going back to domed keyboards or similar inferior keyboards. They feel horrible.

I guess what I am trying to say is do not expect some new over whelming experience when you get a mech board. However as they say "once you've have had clack you never go back".

After owning my ducky I do not regret one minute of it and feel it was worth every penny. Do not confuse what I have said with disappointment. All i am saying is at first (to me at least) it is not something that feels revolutionary straight away but it is something you grow to love.

Edit: previous post came while typing. I didn't realise OP had such specific criteria.

I have used a logitech illuminated as well as other logitech boards prior to moving on to mechanical keyboards. The logitech illuminated is basically a scissor switch, shorter travel but requires bottoming out like your usual membrane/rubber dome. The flat rubberized keys gives you that feel like a laptop which many enjoy, but wasn't something I was partial to since the rubber wore out for me; something like what you see on the bottom of your shoe after continuous use. Once you go mechanical, you get the option of swapping keycaps to POM or PBT or remain with ABS like many mechanicals come stock with. They may not have that rubber feel like the illuminated, but the you can find shorter profile keycaps, someplaces with flat keycaps and with textures.

I've tinkerered with various switches myself, ranging from your usual brown, black, blue and reds to the uncommon clears and greens as well as modifying to ergo clears and panda clears. I've even taken a liking to a Model M I recently acquired armed with buckle springs. The transition to mechanical was a welcomed one, especially with the less strain it put on me in comparison from any rubber dome. Once you become accustomed to one, you may not want to go back. In terms of key travel, there's nothing satisfying like hitting actuation on a mechanical w/o bottoming out in comparison to the illuminated.

Since you posted regarding aesthetics like white backlighting, if you insist on sticking with logitech, you can always go with their G710+ with brown switches. It has the white backlighting you enjoy like the illuminated and has brown switches (even has a wrist rest). If you want something simplier, you can go for the Ducky Shine 2 with white LEDs and you get your choice of switches. If you want to move to something less flashy, there are Duckys without backlighting, Filcos, Leopolds, etc.

I hope that helps a bit. thumb.gif
