I think you are on the wrong site. Please go back to everydaycomputing.net /jk
If someone makes a processor with better performance, someone will find a way to use it and then some.

Without a die shrink or an advance in materials science they have to eke out their performance gains through architecture tweaks or larger die sizes. Welcome to the future.

Or get the software developers to stop coding for a non-existent 10 GHz CPU.

But that's easier said than done, because usually a single thread is easier to code and debug than suppose 8 threads and/or a couple extra hundreds for the GPU.

I think what is going to happen with the slow progression of performance increase is we get software developers to get off their rear ends and actually start coding for optimization. The last 7 or 8 years we have just been advancing so much they got sloppy and said "oh well the CPU can brute force this terrible optimization"

Mmm... Just thought of this. But do you guys remember the physical design of Ivy Bridge leading to so many delidding their chips. I wonder if Intel is using the same design on IB-E. Anyone know?
First, there hasn't been an increase in stock clock speed in a single processor that exceeds the record so far for an Intel chip since the Pentium 4, which topped out at 3.8 or 4 Ghz.

Second, why are people seeming to care about the stock speed at all? IPC matters way more.

Frankly I'm really glad to hear this news cause I'm waiting for IBE, and this slide suggests it will be coming in Q3 after all, not Q4 as it was rumoured to be delayed to. biggrin.gif
