Tired of the AX850

As much as I love the modularity, looks and performance of this PSU, I cannot stand the noise it's making.

It has a constant coil whine, independent of use, which could be worse but still irritates me. On top of that there's this squeaky noise that sounds like it's coming from the fan, sounding like a rat squeaking or a bird singing (in cacophony) which repeats in perfect timing and is driving me crazy.

Now, I think the retailer's warranty is still in effect, so I don't have to send it back to Corsair (paying awful postages). Since I have that option and because noise issues among Corsair PSUs aren't a rare phenomenon, I want to try and get the retailer to give me something else, not by Corsair. Also, from what I'm reading, Seasonic PSUs also have this issue (AX850 is a Seasonic on the inside anyway) so I would like to avoid Seasonic too.

What are some good, silent PSUs?

I have been using an AX850 for ~ 1-1/2 to 2 years and it's dead silent. You should check into a warranty replacement if possible.

well yeah getting that one swapped for another AX850 might well cure the problem

I have a Seasonic X750 which you will see people griping about coil whine sometimes... of course the small group that has the issue are more likely to be found griping than the majority of seasonic X series owners who are happy and are not having any issues ...

I fall into the later (and I presume much much much) larger group... of very happy Seasonic X series owners.

up to you but if you get them to take it back and you want to avoid seasonic

i guess you could get something like

FSP Group AURUM PRO 850W

or

PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 850W (Superflower built this for PC&C)

After posting this I kept thinking I can't be wrong, the squeaky sound had to be something mechanical.

I tried to disassemble the unit, dismounting the fan and then removing some screws, but it was impossible to open it without voiding the warranty sticker. However the metal parts of its case became loose so I jerked them a bit along with the fan and then reassembled the whole thing making sure the fan was mounted tight. I installed the PSU back into my rig and so far I have yet to hear that squeaky sound!

So now it's just the moderate coil whine which really isn't that loud or louder than my GPU's slight coil whine. I was so frustrated by the squeaky noise that I got mad at the PSU.

I'm happy that I solved the problem without any significant effort, I've really been through much **** lately.

Thanks for the suggestions though, guys. thumb.gif

So that squeaky sound has come back for some time now and unless there's something I can do to fix it I'm selling this unit and getting a different one. It all seems like it's a design flaw and I'm not going to play around with Corsair or Seasonic anymore. I considered watercooling mainly for the silence, and my current PSU is killing this for me.

I'm looking for a PSU that's on the same dimensions as the AX850. I strictly need it to be 160mm long or less as I need some clearance for a radiator I'm planning to add next to it. I also want the cabling to be easily bendable else it will still clash onto the radiator.

Besides that I want it to be silent with no reported problems of coil whine / fan noise, to perform similarly to the AX850, to have similar wattage output, and to be aesthetically good (cables too).

I know I'm asking a lot, but the AX850 is a darn good PSU if you don't take the noise problems into account, so replacing it is kind of a big deal to me.

The Be Quiet Dark Power Pro P10 series is the closest you can get to 100% noise/coil whine free units

750 watts and below are made by FSP but above 750 watts its Seasonic made units

Unfortunately it's a little bit out of my reach price-wise and it's 190mm long which just won't work out in my rig. Pretty jealous of its build quality though, wish I had one.

Any other PSU? You make it seem hard to find a quiet one.

The Fractal Design Newton R3 only turn its fan on above 50% load

But again its not small and its not cheap

The Super Flower Golden Silent has no fan at all its 100% fanless

Its also sold as the Rosewill SilentNight and Kingwin Stryker Fanless

Smallest PSU i know of thats not SFX is the SilverStone Strider Gold at 140mm but how quiet it is i dont know

The Fractal Design Newton R3 is 165mm long and its cables seem bendable enough. If only the non-modular ones were black... It's not that expensive either, 200 euros for the 1000W one and I could sell my AX850 for 140-150 I guess.

I'm just wondering if I should make the change or pay the postage and replace my AX850. I guess I'll have to dig for more info at this point to make up my mind. Maybe a trip to Corsair's forum will convince me. tongue.gif
