Running cores at different speed? - Page 2

All active cores in a Core i CPU run at the exact same speed. You can have individual threads and cores entering various low power C states but when a core is active, it will be using the exact same multiplier as every other core in the CPU is using. Any software that is telling you that some of your cores are running with the maximum 63 multiplier is not being very honest.

If you download RealTemp, look in that folder and run the program called i7 Turbo GT. It will show you what each thread of your CPU is doing. Put a load on your CPU and post a screen shot of that.

Cores CAN run at diffrent multipliers. Tested on my phenom II(and the performance test show up that higher cloked cores are faster than the lower clocked ones). Turbo core is a perfect example of this.

Yes you can have different boost multipliers, but I am highly skeptical of that 6.5 ghz figure. How did you oc, have you stressed it, and I would double check with cpu-z for each core.

If you look on the bottom left his multiplier is set at 63 on 3 cores.

There is no way anything is actually at 6.3Ghz in windows at that voltage, or being cooled with air or water. I would blame buggy aisuite.

Well, you can always activate only 3 cores in the BIOS if you really want to give 6.3GHz a shot.
I'd really like to see that screenshot. smile.gif

I think something is wrong with whatever program you're using. Like others have said, trust CPu-z and upload a validation.

If you haven't set a multiplier of 63 in your BIOS, then you aren't running at 6.3 GHz.

What you can do is set different multipliers for different numbers of active cores. This means when only 1 core is active, you can have 4.6 GHz, for 2 active cores maybe 4.5 GHz, 3 active cores 4.4 GHz, and 4 active cores 4.3 GHz. This is how intel's turbo boost works. However, if 4 cores are active, each one will run at the same speed. You can't have 1 core running at 4.6 GHz and one core running at 4.3 GHz if they're active at the same time. That in combination with 6.3 GHz being absurd is why I think something is wrong with your program.

Programs and windows aside, what are BIOS settings?

This. Why is anyone even discussing that part of it - it's completely obvious that the chip isn't running at 6.3.

I was only pointing out why the OP thought it was at 6.3 on 3 cores.
