AMD next gen proccessor

so AMD and ATI have merged. well, alls still good out in the computer world, beyond the paion of waiting for AMD to release their new processors to counter conroe. Well, it looks obvious that they will be making new proccessors that merge videocards and cpus, but thats in the future. what about this next year?




so, that being said, its time to speculate and discuss and theorize!!1
i think they will make stream processors. they are already piloting a program to use radeon's on PCB boards in PCI slots to add to a computers processing power, unleashing the monster that is the 1900 processors. read that on either the TG daily rss feed or the xbit labs one, anywho, it shouldnt be terribly hard to take a GPU, take out the unneseccary shaders and just leave the programmable ones, put a particularily big one that can accept all of the standerd cpu instruction sets, and this would divide calclations among the remaing shaders.

so enlarge one shader, add a big cache and do some architecture stuff that would divide calculations amoong the shaders regardless of whether the add is multithreaded, and major bonus points if it works in current motherboards. this way u can unlease the 300gigaflop monsters that used to just do rendering.

Well since AMD is going for a dual socket implementation, and quad core CPUs, plus the merger with ATI, I think we will see games being multi-threaded big time.

2 or 3 cores to split the main processing of the game

1 core for physics

2 cores to split the graphics load with the video card(s) depending on how they program and implement the video cards and cpus

1 core for texturing

1 core to run the music

Making all add on cards completely obsolete, as it will all be streamlined into the CPUs.

Eventually they will incorporate everything into one little neat package of multiple CPU cores, and that will be a very good innovation for laptops. In the next decade we might even see a dramatic increase of power in handheld devices from advances made by AMD (that are also implemented by other companies.)

doing things all on one die would significanly increase speeds because of lower latency, hence the onboard memory controllers amd uses. but with more smaller not quite cores but floating pooint proccessors and the other small things that make up one, and having a lot of them the proccessor could automatically divide up the calculations

Intel has been researching GPU on CPU for at least the last year. Analyst expect an entry-level GPU on CPU in 2008. One of the reasons AMD aquired ATI is to catch up.

thats the best part, that it wouldnt be much more expensive to make than current proccessors, espectailly if all ur doing is changing a gpu into a cpu to start

if nvidia lessens the size of quad-sli cards, you could have 8 procs and 8 gpus lol

technically cuz of 8 cores of each type
