I would have these sections:
Home Theater
Stereophile (Speakers, headphones, IEMs, all related hardware)
Recording
Gaming Audio (Sound cards, headsets/headphones for gaming, etc.)
Music

Frankly, if people want to talk about ultra high-end stuff, there are other forums dedicated to it. I also don't think there is enough IEM discussion here to warrant its own section

There's only 11 threads with new replies today... I just don't think we could support that many sections.

I don't think there are enough home theater enthusiast on this forum to support it's own sub forum.

As long as I am Audio Editor here, this ain't gonna happen. This subforum is not going to turn into the mess that the Head-fi non-headphone/earphone subforums are. Also the rules don't allow / contradict this in the first place.

There's far too much FUD in audio and I have a responsibility to eliminate as much of it, with help with other posters, as much as possible.

Also guys, as with any Internet forum, it's no good having a dormant 20 post subforum no-one posts in, so factor in demographics when suggesting a breakdown of subforums thanks smile.gif

This thread is now sticky'ed.

Too many sticky threads?

who doesn't need a DA Converter? speakers? amplifier? Headphones?

some HiFi forums have a dozen sub forums. i'm only talking about a couple. the sub forums will start slow but pick up.

I don't want this place to be at the mercy of sound cards and headsets like every other computer forum. I hope i'm not the only one who feels this way. I want this place to grow. I want to expose people to HiFi, express opinion, laugh with others who enjoy this hobby but I can't do any of that here.

I have to agree. This isn't specifically an audio forum and more of a general tech forum now. We don't really get that many traffic on the audio forums and even then it's usually about what headphones to choose.

I was wondering Chinesekiwi, if you could consider the below mentioned possible restructuring of the Audio Sub-Forum. I understand that currently the Audio Sub-Forum does not have a lot of activity. However, I honestly think that the way it is currently organized and structured contributes to part of that problem. Here are why I feel like the current presentation is detrimental to increasing the activity of Audio Sub-Forum:

1. The title itself "Sound Cards and Computer Audio" places a visual priority on sound cards, making computer audio more of an afterthought in my opinion. Given OCN's motto of "The Pursuit of Performance" should we not also encourage users to pursue audio performance as well? In my humble opinion, sound cards should be an afterthought and the title should reflect an emphasis on general computer audio equipment.

2. I honestly feel like after clicking on "Sound Cards and Computer Audio", the amount of random threads that pop up can seem overwhelmingly cluttered and hard to search through. While headphones, speakers, amplifiers, and dedicated source components are all related to sound, I really believe that having audio components better structured would encourage people to at least click on those they are interested in to check things out.

3. In my opinion, making threads like the Club threads and photo threads more immediately visible will also go a long way in garnering people's attention. One of things that drew me to liquid cooling along time ago and therefore this site, was the photo gallery thread for people's liquid cooled rigs. I took a look through the first few pages and instantly fell in love with the idea and took off with it. If people take a look at all the great headphones out there, I feel like it would definitely lure them in.

Again, I know that the audio forum does not generate a lot of activity, so its restructuring may not be high on anyone's priority list. However, to paraphrase Field of Dreams; if you build it, he will come. Without further ado, here is what I recommend for consideration:

if you create content and promote it on the site people will consume it. the audio section is disorganized and small because you let it. the audio section can be so much more. creating something out of nothing at the cost of nothing.

While I'm still not sure if we could really support 4 subsections, I think that is a decent breakdown.

I would suggest changing Headphones & IEM to "Headphones, Ect." or something like that. I had no idea what IEM meant until I looked into higher quality options... and I bet lots of new people don't either.

The music and music files section also doesn't sit well. Music artist discussion really belongs in off-topic, since it's not technology... I think music player and formatting discussion isn't going to see very much activity regardless of if the change brings more activity or not. Maybe rolling that into a "Source components and files" would be a better idea, since the source file and the source components go together well enough.

That is great feedback. I can definitely see people not recognizing IEM. I really like your idea about the music player and audio file formats being under the source nested sub-forum as well. Does this look more streamlined and manageable? There is only 3 sub-forums now with dedicated sources and software sources combined together. Also got rid of the music thread because I agree that it belongs elsewhere.
