Need advice for overclocking GTX 680

So the question I have so what should I watch out for when overclocking? I do want to overclock but I want my gpu to last long.

I am new to this overclocking and I have been researching and such. I understand that increasing voltage can cause gpu to die faster. RIght now I am using evga precision x
These are my base stats:
I have intel i5 3570k default no overclock

for GTX 680 I have this following:
Base Clock: 1006MHz
Boost Clock: 1058MHz
Memory Clock: 6000MHz

What I am doing now is leaving my voltage at 988 default. I increased power to 121%. Increased GPU clock offest to 129 MHZ and Mem clock offeset to 300 MHZ.

Before overclock, I get max payne 3 with about 50% GPU load with max fps at 60. Temp is around 50c.

After overclock, I get average 150 fps and GPU load is around 90%. I average around gpu temperature 70c..

Does that sound ok?

You need to OC the CPU if you GPU usage isnt b@ 100% or close to it. Low GPU usage means a CPU bottleneck

Well when I was testing it at 98% gpu load, mine gpu temp seem to be going up to almost 80 and such. I never really ran it for long enough. I stopped once I hit over 75.

So should I keep playing around with setting until I find a setting that average gpu temp around 70 with 98% gpu load?

If he's getting 150 FPS, his CPU is fine.

The card is fine to run at 80C, but it'll start to throttle the core clock speed at 70 (and then again at 80) so you might want to make a custom fan profile in Precision to ramp the fan speed up a little and keep the temps down. Your overclock sounds fine, but what is your actual final load clock speed as reported by PRecisionX under load (not the offset)?

So I decide to set a fan curve. So as soon as Temp goes over 50c+ I am setting the fan speed to 60%+.

Right now, I am able to get 1254 MHZ full load and Not sure how much Mem clock but I have it set to +300 MHZ and I was able to maintain temp at 70c.

My concern is I have the power target to 131%, and the most it uses is around 121% under full load. If I have my power target set to max (131%) will it hurt my gpu? and voltage is locked at 1175 default. I know that the more voltage, the lesser card will last. But since voltage is locked at 1175 default, I should be fine right?

Yes, 1.175V is fine long-term, and it is okay to leave the power limit maxed out - as you've seen, the card will only draw the power it need,s and the card can handle 130% no problem.

Saw this thread and thought I'd ask my own OC question regarding the 680. I just got the MSi N680GTX card and was playing with the numbers. I was happy with my initial reading of 3DMark's score but then I saw what y'all were getting on this site and was quickly dismayed lol

Any suggestions? My card, rig, and score are in the sig.

Thanks
- Charles
