Upgrading to 2 ATI 6990's and want some advice

Thread Starter
Hi everybody!
I currently have a ok setup i guess, but lately been thinking of getting another ATI HD 6990. My mobo is an ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0. The main question I have is, what performance difference will there be if its only running at 4x in crossfire. Would it be worth upgrading the mobo to one that can handle 16x in crossfire? how much of a performance difference is there between the two?

First of all, good luck getting more than %60 utilization on the fourth GPU.
As for PCie lanes, dual x8 with PCie would not bottleneck too much, somewhere like 3%. With x4 you are looking at a significant bottleneck of the card.

Just as I thought it would be running at x8 so if only about 3% off loose of performance I would not notice any difference.
what do you mean by "First of all, good luck getting more than %60 utilization on the fourth GPU."
I'm not sure what you mean?

Scaling beyond two GPUs is very bad. Also, it wouldnt be a wise decision to buy two-generation old hardware with the intention of quadfire. Even two 7970s will probably give better performance over two 6990s. Plus, the thermal and acoustic performance of a 6990 is horrible, and with two of them you've got ultra horrible.
Also, you should balance out the money you spend on your components. A 1090T will probably definitely be a bottleneck for two 6990s. It would probably be better to upgrade your CPU to something more recent and stick to a single 6990. Even today, that card should hold its own in most games.
If you want to upgrade GPU and want monstrous performance boosts, you should get a 7990. They should be coming out soon and there's no game that your current card should have any problems with.

If you want to stick to AMD for both CPU and GPU, all things considered, you should wait for Steamroller CPUs and the upcoming 7990 GPU. When they come out, sell your current CPU and GPU and get a new CPU+GPU combo. You have an advantage here since you already have an AM3+ mobo which the steamroller CPUs will be on. Best way to go, in my opinion.

Hope this helps! thumb.gif

Your CPU will be a huge bottleneck for 2 6990's. Definitely upgrade CPU. Go with a 3770K/2600K or wait for Steamroller if you want to stick with AMD. Then get another 6990. They'll be cheaper by then anyways.

With your CPU it would probably be same with it or without it.

thanks for the advice
I have been planing on upgrading the CPU thats why i just purchased this mobo. I am thinking the AMD AM3+ x8 FX-8350 4.0Ghz/8Core/16M/125W but before hand want to crossfire the 6990 and get 2 of
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=207_314&products_id=19506
to keep it quiet. I know that i'll need a new case but i don't want to send any more money on this pc after this. so I want the best options as until i have enough money. this PC will be used as a dedicated flight/driving sim with 3 monitors.
Then I will be building a next gen AMD PC, I do love AMD

I'd sell the 6990 you currently have an put the money towards a 7970 and a new cpu.

I dont want to sell it I want to finish this PC with no more upgrades. so that PC is dedicated to Falcon 4 BMS & DCS Simulators. the Pc will be placed inside a fa/18 cockpit in time. I will be building a new PC in the mean time, so I want to max out the mobo
