Tablet for University use

Thread Starter
Looking for a tablet somehwere in the price range of 500-700 USD where the 500-700 USD includes the keyboard / screen cover if applicable

Primary uses:
- using word and excel
- light youtube surfing
- includes either SD / MicroSD / USB2.0 / USB3.0
- good battery life
- can connect to an external keyboard / mouse (bluetooth accepted)

For entertainment, music and video are fine for me. Not a big fan of games and such biggrin.gif

In general I prefer the windows 8 / RT tablets that have come out these days but don't have much knowledge on it. Please let me know some good options!

Sounds to me like the MS Surface RT fits the bill quite nicely. It does and has all you want plus it includes Office 2013 for free.

Yeah, either a Surface RT and Type Cover or an Asus Vivo Pad if the keyboard is better.

Now that i've done some research, i've boiled it down to 2 choices.
Surface RT and the ASUS vivotab smart

Surface RT has preinstalled office, more portability with the touchcover BUT its RT -.- thats pretty much the only con

The vivotab is full w8, good memory and other specs but has the opposite... No preinstalled office and is less portable.

Is there a solution, will microsoft someday release something to update the software on RT to make it full w8?

Let me know what you think!

I can understand the Nexus 7/10 if Android (for quick updates, no bloat, etc) but if running a full Windows 8 x86 install, I don't see why you should limit yourself to just the Microsoft Surface. You get updates at the same time with other Win8 tablets and if you're concerned about bloatware, then there's always a clean install.

I've got an Asus Vivotab Smart with the TranSleeve and bluetooth keyboard. It's lightweight, has a long lasting battery, and Windows 8 runs smooth as butter on it. My only complaint is that the little USB charger doesn't provide enough juice to charge the battery and power the device at the same time. Watching Youtube videos with the display set to max brightness will very slowly deplete the battery even when it's plugged in. Other than that, it does everything my old laptop did while weighing 1/4th as much.

I'd get the nexus if only I could use microsoft excel/word on it as easily as I would on a computer.
As for the surface... RT is so limiting and the pro version is way too expensive for me
Right now I'm seeing Vivotab as the best option, in terms of price, lightweightness, OS and functions
The only thing that sucks is it doesn't have a built in stylus
