HP Proliant ML350 G3 - What to do with it?

Hi all,

I got, what I believe is a HP Proliant ML350 G3 from my dads work, as the got a new server there and they weren't using this one any more. I was hoping that I could run ESXi or Hyper-V on it so I could get some virtulization going on.But I was told it wouldn't be possible as the CPU would not support it. (Well that's what my dad told me). I hoped that you could help me out determine what is possible with the machine and what would be my best strategy to go with.

Support link HP

CPU: Socket 604 - Xeon (1 out of 2)
RAM: 2GB - EEC -PC2100 - DDR
HDD: 6x SCSI drives - 4x 36.4GB | 2x 146.8GB

My initial plan was to run multiple VM's on the server and run application as VPN, Webserver, FTP, Plex Media, but I would like to hear what you should do with it and how.

Thanks in advance,
-Rexel

That generation of server used a Socket 604 CPU, and DDR1 RAM. Nothing in that era supported VT-x, which is needed for HVM (Hardware-Based Virtual Machines). You may be able to run some sort of PV (Paravirtualization), but don't expect much from it. Not to mention that 2GB of RAM isn't going to allow for maybe 2 VMs at the most. That CPU is likely to be a single core (which Socket 604 was EOL around 2006/2007, which was before HyperThreading).

In all honesty, that server would serve great as a door stop, or a stool. I would think the power draw is not worth what it can do. A modern day laptop would put that thing to shame. Again, we are talking Socket 604, DDR1 RAM, PCI-X, IDE, and SCSI. All technology that has basically died off.

Have you considered trying to swap out the motherboard/CPU/RAM with something more modern? The case is clunky, but has lots of room if you are up for some case modding.

Where I work our door stops are PC's much more performant than this one.(true fact)

But the case can still be of some use. Maybe you could do something with it.

Thanks for the fast replies!

I think I will just give it back to my dad and save some money on getting a decent case later on with some propper hardware instead of modding this one.
Thanks though for all the infomation you two have given me.
