Control Panel > Sound > Your main speaker setup > Configure > Select 5.1 > Select everything that is selectable > Apply changes.

Hi folks I believe I may have found the problem and feel like a fool now maybe you can confirm this for me? Is it true that all sound that comes out of PC's is stereo inculding games unless the source is 5.1?

This sorts my poroblem out but unfortunatly still dosent explain why I simply dont have the option of anymore than 2 channels or a 2 speaker set up I belive it will probably remain a mystery! I wilk just have to deal with the built in system in the headset that changes stereo to 5.1.

Thanks for the help though folks, I was much appreciated!

Not sure. It definitely works for me (though I have a sound card). Right click on the volume control on the taskbar and click Playback Devices:

Highlight the device you're using and click configure (as seen above)

From there, you should be able to select 5.1.

In general, though, if you only have 1 3.5mm connection, it's very likely that you will only get a stereo signal (since there are only 2 signal connections in a 3.5mm plug) and that there is external processing that is "mimicing" a 5.1 signal. I can mimic a 7.1 signal (8 channels) with my sound card, but I don't since I only have 2 ears and 2 speakers. Your choice.

Yeah man I know I currently have it connected using Optical and USB it doesn't even give me an option to configure my speakers with the Optical input and the speakers that are available through the USB only give stereo as an option.

And just in-case people say there are only to speakers in a headset there are four in each ear cup on mine giving me a total of eight speakers combined.

Cheers for the reply though.

You are correct. The source you are using must have 5.1 or a Theater mode option to get the best surround sound. And like in post #6 you also have to tell the your pc to push the 5.1 sound along to your sound card or on board audio. I say the best surround sound because there are sound cards that can mimic surround sound for your headphones with CMSS 3D.
