I hope the steamroller really does steamroll. Not just a name.

What about the price, that's the real question x)
I just can't see AMD compete against Intel's 14nm Haswell, altho I would like I am wrong.
As I said before, I think in the next year of two, games will run just as fast or faster on AMD chips than Intel's, because of optimizations using 8 cores, thanks to the new consoles.
So, if Streamroller increases IPC compared to PD, and uses less power (28nm), it is a no brainer for me.
I'd rather support AMD than Intel.
AMD added to more cores to the Phenom II at 45nm for roughly the same price (245$- 295$).
Then with 32nm, they gave us an 8-core.
Intel, on the other had, is selling a quad core for the same price for generations, 65nm, 45nm, 32nm, and now 22nm. I would bet they make more money per CPU each generation (by lowering the die size).

(And I don't agree that Intel has no competition from AMD, so they don't need to push anymore. They have to compete with themselves! I have no problem staying with my 2600K as long as they release mild updates like Ivy or Haswell. It's nearly 2 years since I got the 2600K and I haven't seen something twice as fast, isn't Intel following Moor's law anymore?)

Here's hoping - anyway .

Amen to this. Good lord AMD needs a solid platform, not just a CPU.

As I said before, consoles using AMD CPU's will not make a blind bit of difference and will not push AMD CPU's above Intels.

There's games out now that use all 8 cores on the FX CPU's and they still get beat by Intel chips.

The only thing that consoles will do is ensure that all 8 threads are loaded meaning AMD won't get completely destroyed like they have done and will be closer to Intel in terms of performance then they have been for a very long time.

They'll still flat out suck in low threaded games though....

And for the first few years atleast next generation console games will be using nothing more then tweaked current generation game engines until developers start to create and finish true next generation game engines.

Current generation console game engines are still lame at threading...

It's Nvidia that should be worried as nearly all ports will have dedicated tweaks and optimisations for AMD GPU's and not theres...

There's no Crossfire or SLI bottleneck with AMD chipsets.... that's nothing more then a dreamt up fan boy excuse...

You go and look at ANY GPU dependant game/benchmark with dual GPU's and an AMD system will score very very close to an Intel system.

So where's the bottleneck?
not holding my breath for this one. amd betrayed me with bulldozer (btw i've been a long time amd enthusiast and a lot of people know me being the no.1 defender of bulldozer when leaked benchmarks came oout) please surprise me amd. I may have two intel systems now but deep inside I'm still an AMD fan girl
post #109 of 718
Slowly get us where we want to AMD. It doesn't need to be as fast as Intel with AMD prices. But every IPC increase means a step in the right direction.

So you are saying a 4 core i5 will be faster than a 8 core FX?

And I hope you realize that after some point, CPU's don't matter as you will be GPU-limited if it is a taxing game.

Any game released for the new consoles will be threaded to use 8 cores. There is no way getting around that, as per core performance will be low. All the new engines (Unreal 4, Cryengine 3, Frostbite 2) are optimized (or will be) to use an 8 core.
