I'd have to go with a 7970 if you don't plan to crossfire, I used to use nvidia, didn't have problems but I don't regret the switch over to an AMD card. pretty much same performance if not a little better for a lower cost. (not including their gaming evolved deals)
If the 7870 Tahti cooling is like the 7900 then I'd suggest a sapphire, I never go over 70C running games on max or for long periods 3+ hrs and I can NEVER hear the fans running.

All this said and done, it comes down to money. With AMDs two free games/lower price, I can wait it out then decide to go crossfire or 7xx. Done deal.

If you are going with one gpu I think your decision is good. If I were you, when it comes to upgrading, go with a new single card solution and sell your 7970. Don't get a second one.

Why would you do that?

Unless you need CUDA I really can't think of a good reason to go nVidia.

The Mac in itself isn't bad, but gaming on the Mac is.

Personally, gaming and productivity loses on a mac. I think it is that my papers require many sources open at once. Windows Aero in windows 7 or multiple workspaces on linux pretty much make this work really well. With mac it just seems like the os is fighting me.

When I ran just one 4890 it preformed as expected. Sold reliable FPS and very few issues. After moving up to crossfire there where the typical issues like having to wait for drivers/patches to get the scaling and kinks worked out but most of the time thous got sorted out in a reasonable time frame.

Now is the GTX 670 a better graphics solution? Yes but that's what its supposed to be as its a newer more powerful single card setup.

Its also worth keeping in mind that not all issues you had with your 6950 crossfire setup where crossfire or even AMD specific issues. Unless you go back and play the same games using the same patches you can't really draw a conclusion which card setup works better. Some games favor AMD while other work better with Nvidia so what has happened to work better for you might have been the exact opposite for others has they have been playing a different set of games.

I did. I tried lowering the settings too. You can seriously tell the difference. I tried literally a month to get skyrim or gothic 3 or crysis 2 to work properly. Battlefield worked like a champ but even going down to one 6950 was not as good of a time as switching sides.

Yes I understand the 670 is a more powerful card, but when you change settings down and it doesn't help the choppiness its just how it is.
