Memory bandwidth significantly affecting 3DMark11 score?

I benched at two sets of settings:

1. 4.75GHz 3930K with 32GB (8x4GB) - quad-channel memory: Physics score - 14,274
2. 4.875GHz 3930K with 8GB (2x4GB) - single-channel memory: Physics score - 12,072

The idea was to lighten the load on whichever part of the CPU is the memory controller to OC higher (which I can) by using fewer sticks, but it seems like the performance hit (at least in a synthetic benchmark) I take from doing from quad to dual channel memory is greater than I had anticipated.

Systems running anything 2d generally do better with all the channels filled. Leaving a channel empty doesn't usually have a large effect on graphics scores or gaming, but it will hurt anything where the cpu is working.
